If you are new to the Star Wars universe and wondering whether the latest movie is for you, this is the right place. The latest Disney’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu starring Pedro Pascal is directed by Jon Favreau. The film is a continuation of the TV series The Mandalorian and is set shortly after the Empire’s defeat in Return of the Jedi. However, the latest addition works as a standalone film. This sci-fi film is not all bad, as it has some engaging moments. Here’s a review so you can decide it for yourself! Read on.

Plot

The Bounty hunter Din Djarin, AKA Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal), and Grogu are working for the New Republic. Mando gets a new mission, which is to save Jabba the Hutt’s son, Rhotta, in return for some information on Lord Janu, a man running a criminal syndicate. However, during the mission, Mando learns that the Hutts are working for the Empire, and Rhotta will not be safe with them. Therefore, Mandalorian attacks and captures Lord Janu to bring him back to the New Empire.

However, this starts a new enmity for Mandalorian. The Hutts get him captured and he is brought to Nal Hatta. Now, whether he escapes or decides to fight the Hutts, you have to watch the film to know that.

The Grogu And Mandalorian Love

Throughout the film, there are moments when Grogu takes care of the Mandalorian. The heartwarming love between Mando and Grogo is perfectly captured in these soft, silent bits, and it hits all the right chords. I could hear many “awws” during these scenes. These scenes are well-written and emotionally engaging.

Some Fight Sequences

A particular sequence when Rhotta and Mandalorian fight against weird creatures is quite enjoyable. Another airfight sequence also had my interest. The CGI is impressive.

The Story, Screenplay

The screenplay of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is not up to the mark. It’s underwhelming and stretched. The basic premise of the movie is unevenly paced, and it just feels like a series of sequences patched together, but nothing really works out as a whole plot. Keeping aside all the action and Grogu parts, the other conflicts at hand are not thrilling or engaging. The story also felt juvenile, and the stakes were surprisingly not high here!

There are hardly any significant or memorable dialogues in the film. Most of them just want to be like any other massy dialogue that does not land.

The Background Score

The background score fails to keep up with the standards of the previous Star Wars films. The one BGM that stands out in the film is when Mandalorian reaches Lord Janu’s land to save Rhotta the Hutt as a part of his mission.

Verdict

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is not an exceptionally well-made film. The plot is loosely stitched, and the screenplay is weak. However, it does have some heartwarming moments and bits that bring back your wandering attention during the run time. This franchise has a long legacy, and the amount of good things I have heard about it from fans, this film does not seem to do justice! It hits theatres on May 22, 2026.
