In an article, Namrata Dutt remembered the time when her entire family had to temporarily shift to the US for Nargis’ treatment and how it was during this time that Sunil Dutt did not leave her side even for a second. She recalled him staying next to her every single day, feeding her, and cleaning her. Namrata went on to say that even she and her sister Priya Dutt would take turns looking after their mother

Namrata Dutt even goes on to say that Nargis was completely content with her marital life after she quit acting and that her kids – she, Priya Dutt, and Sanjay Dutt – meant the most to her. She said that their familial life was ideal but that changed when her mother contracted cancer. She recalled the time when her father would use binoculars to watch her hospital room as he was living in a rented apartment right opposite the hospital.

Talking about the time when Nargis slipped into a coma after they removed her pancreas, Namrata said, “Coma patients can’t react but they apparently register everything. So, we would read out the news to her, talk to her about what’s happening in Bombay, as though she was very much there.” And the time the actress woke up and stood up with the help of a walker was when people at the hospital called her “Miracle Lady”.

While speaking about her Nargis’ journey of fighting cancer, Namrata Dutt recalls the time when the actress broke down when she looked at herself in the mirror after years. She said, “While getting ready, she happened to see her reflection in the mirror after months. Her skin had turned dark with chemotherapy. She had lost hair. She couldn’t believe what she saw and broke down.”

Ma passed away on this day when I was 14 years old but she has never left my side. I have missed her physical presence but as you grow older you realise there is more than the physical presence and learn to connect with the soul. Her soul is in my life and in the work I am able to do through The Nargis Dutt foundation, I am living their ( mom & Dad) dreams and loving every moment of it. 41 years since mom left and The Nargis Dutt Foundation was Born…… Her memories and her work will carry on Everywhere”
