Ranbir Kapoor Tries To Justify Body-Shaming Alia Bhatt. Is He Trying To Clean Up The Raita He ‘Phaloed’?

Ranbir Kapoor Tries To Justify Body-Shaming Alia Bhatt. Is He Trying To Clean Up The Raita He ‘Phaloed’?

I feel like out of all the men that are out to upset and offend women, Ranbir Kapoor has incurred the wrath of women the most. The actor has been facing the heat for a while for being insensitive towards the women in his life and blatantly offensive towards them. One of the most recent examples of this is when he cracked a joke at the expense of his wife, Alia Bhatt on a live comment on her body. After the outrage, he has now apologised and I don’t know whether to take him seriously or not.

In a promotional event for Brahmāstra in Chennai along with SS Rajamouli and Nagarjuna, Ranbir Kapoor has apologised for “jokingly” fat-shaming Alia Bhatt by saying she is “phaloed” while being pregnant! During the interview with the media, he was asked if he would like to clarify his statement. He firstly said sorry for offending people with his statement. Ranbir claimed that he loves his wife and it is a joke that didn’t turn out to be funny. He added that he spoke to Alia about it and she wasn’t upset or offended but laughed it off saying she didn’t mind the comment. Furthermore, Ranbir then went on to apologise for offending or triggering anyone and attempted to justify his actions saying that he has a “bad sense of humour” which sometimes falls flat on his own face.

I personally don’t want to sit and make assumptions about Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s marriage or relationship. Hence, I will talk about the statement itself. Now I have met a lot of people with a bad sense of humour and I don’t think that is a valid justification. The fact that Ranbir thought that commenting on his wife’s body is okay, especially when she is pregnant, is problematic within itself. This was a thought that shouldn’t have crossed his mind in the first place. The problem isn’t his sense of humour but the mindset, that men believe that casually and publicly commenting on women’s bodies is okay when that is not the case. Having said that, I really hope that Ranbir is able to be more sensitive and empathetic; taking this controversy as a learning experience.
