‘Stranger Things’ Star Millie Bobby Brown Calls Out The “Gross” Media And Press Who Have Sexualised Her Since A Young Age

It is a shame that we live in a world where let alone women but even little girls are sexualised. Especially if they are put in the limelight from a young age and are constantly in public scrutiny. It is as though the media waits for these girls to turn 18 so they can publicly sexualise them and talk about their bodies; remember what happened to Billie Eilish after she turned 18? And now Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown has come forth and spoken about her own experiences of being sexualised by the media as a child and since she turned 18.

Millie Bobby Brown was on The Guilty Feminist podcast recently and spoke about all the ways she has been sexualised. While she was merely 12 when she landed the role of Eleven on Stranger Things, she has been dealing with comments about her appearance “for forever”. However, she turned 18 in February, Brown says that she has noticed a difference in the way the press and media talk about her. She said that she is dealing with the same issues as most 18-year-olds do. She is learning to navigate being an adult, friendships and relationships. She further added that trying to fit in and be liked is a lot and being in the public eye makes it even more overwhelming.

Brown further said that she has definitely noticed a difference in the way people, media and the press act with her since she turned 18 and called it “gross.” Gross, indeed! She then added that this just represents how young girls are sexualised in our world. She recalled a time when she had chosen to wear a poofy low-cut dress to a red carpet event and was ostracized for her outfit of choice. Brown remembered wondering that this isn’t something that people should be concerned about and the focus should be on, “the incredible people that were there at the awards show, the talent that was there and the people that we’re representing.”

Brown also reminisced and said that missed feeling innocent and naive when she first started Stranger Things. She said that she misses that and it affects her acting. She further said that she is very aware of her body now; not in a bad way though. However, she is super conscious of how her face moves on camera. Brown further said that she is aware of how toxic social media can be and is choosing to take a different approach. She says that she wants to be a better role model for younger people. Hence, she wants her social media to be free of her own personal stuff and toxicity where a 12 year old can come and get some respite. How thoughtful of her! Millie Bobby Brown said, “I hope if there’s a 12-year-old that’s told Instagram they’re 18, and they’ve created an account, they’re going on my account and they’re not being exploited to the horrible world that’s out there.”
