Oscars: Michelle Yeoh Bags Maiden Oscar Nomination, First Asian Best Actress Nominee!

Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh took the international entertainment industry by storm at the Golden Globes Award after she called out racism in Hollywood. Michelle was the first Malaysian actress to win a Golden Globes Award for best actress for the sci-fi fantasy comedy-drama film Everything Everywhere All At Once. During her acceptance speech, the actress took a moment to slam the racism in Hollywood while recalling an incident from the time when she first moved to Hollywood to achieve her career goal. And now, the actress might have to prepare yet another acceptance speech because she has officially received her first-ever Oscar nomination under the best actress category for the same film!

The official 95th Academy Awards nominations were announced on January 24. Among the 95th Oscars nominees was actress Michelle Yeoh. The actress was nominated for the best actress in a leading role award for Everything Everywhere All At Once. She will be competing against Ana De Armas (nominated for Blonde), Cate Blanchett (nominated for Tár), Andrea Riseborough (nominated for To Leslie) and Michelle William (nominated for The Fablemans).

What makes this Oscar nomination even more special is that the Asian actress has not only bagged her first-ever Oscar nomination but has also become the first Asian actress to bag an Oscars nomination. No other Asian actress has ever been nominated for the Academy Awards for the best actress in a leading role category in the past.

Michelle Yeoh received several accolades and awards for her spectacular performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Written and directed by Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), the sci-fi comedy-drama film was produced by the Russo brothers. Michelle Yeoh played the role of Evelyn Quan Wang, an immigrant who is a laundromat owner. During her encounter with the IRS, Evelyn finds out that she has to connect all the different versions of herself in the parallel universe in order to save the multiverse. Yeoh plays various characters in the film including a wife, agent, actress, warrior and more which could not have been easy. This is also why she was praised by film critics for her work.

FYI, Everything Everywhere All At Once was on the list of the top ten films of 2022 according to the American Film Institute as well as the National Board of Review. So far, the film has won 5 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and two Golden Globe Awards among several others.
