Madhur Virli Sparks Controversy With New Joke
A clip from Madhur Virli’s latest comedy video ‘Casual Tea’ is going viral on the internet. In the clip, the comedian makes a joke about the song’s line, “Chotti dress mein bomb lagdi maine” (You look hot in a short dress). Madhur Virli goes on to say that women may feel insecure about this line. He then asks, “Kya ladkiyan normal dresses mein bomb nahi lag sakti, lag sakti hai, kya ladkiyan long dresses mein bomb nahi lag sakti, lag sakti hai, kya ladkiyan burkhe mein bomb nahi rakh sakti, lag sakti bol raha tha”. (Can girls not look like bombs in normal dresses? They can. Can they not look like bombs in long dresses? They can). The fumble in the burqa line got a reaction from the audience, which Madhur Virli went on to describe as a “slip of the tongue.” He tried to calm the audience by reiterating that it was just a mistake. He also smiled and said, “Bohot accha laga saare Islamophobes saath aa gaye.” (All the Islamophobes have come together).
Many people on the internet called out this joke for being insensitive towards a certain religion. Women have always been on the receiving end of hate and jokes, and this time it’s their religion and clothes that are being weaponsied to demean them further. This, in a way, encourages some strong stereotypes.
