I’ve never been much of a watch enthusiast, which is why I never bought one for myself. The only watch I’ve worn regularly is my mother’s Titan Raga. Despite that, I knew almost nothing about the brand’s journey or its legacy. That changed when I watched Made In India: A Titan Story, directed by Robbie Grewal and featuring Naseeruddin Shah and Jim Sarbh. The film offered a fascinating glimpse into the making of one of India’s most respected and iconic brands.

Plot

The series is based on a true story from Vinay Kamath’s book. It begins when a foreign expert insults J.R.D. Tata, saying Indians cannot make good watches. Hurt but fired up, Tata gives the job to Xerxes Desai, a smart and determined leader. Set in the difficult 1970s, Desai puts together a small team and tries to build a quality Indian watch brand from nothing.

However, the journey isn’t smooth like butter because of the government paperwork, smuggling and other stuff. But Xerxes Desai trusts his people. He lets them make mistakes and keeps pushing forward. Finally, they create a simple, good-looking watch that regular Indians actually love. The brand starts growing fast and becomes a source of pride. But their next move goes wrong and leads to a lot of issues. What happens next? Did they make a bright comeback? I’m not spoiling the fun!

Performances

Jim Sarbh plays Xerxes Desai really well. He shows the pressure, doubt, and quiet determination of a man carrying a huge dream on his shoulders. You feel his struggle in every scene. He makes the character feel like a real person, not just a hero on screen.

Naseeruddin Shah is excellent as J.R.D. Tata. He brings his calm presence and wisdom to the role. The moments between Shah and Sarbh are some of the best parts and you almost wish you had a mentor like that.

The supporting cast also does a good job. Vaibhav Tatwawadi stands out with his expressions. Lakshvir Singh Saran, Kaveri Seth, and the rest of the team feel like actual colleagues who care about the work. Their group chemistry and personal struggles make the story feel more human.

Verdict

The show looks clean and real. From the vintage setting to the marketing efforts, everything is done nicely. It also shows the personal side of the team like family pressure, stress, and small joys, without going overboard. But the series is not perfect. The biggest problem is the slow pace. Many episodes drag with discussions and repeated moments. For Gen Z viewers who like faster stories, these parts can feel boring and stretched. Some emotional conversations in office settings also feel fake. In real life, people don’t usually open up that much or function emotionally during work meetings.

On the brighter note, the show stays grounded. It avoids unnecessary romance or dramatic villains, which feels refreshing. The focus stays on the challenges of building a brand. The team spirit, marketing ideas, and never-give-up attitude come across strongly and honestly. If you like business stories, underdog tales, or just want to know how an everyday brand was born, give it a shot. The performances by Jim Sarbh and Naseeruddin Shah carry the show and make the journey feel powerful.
