Hautetalk: Why Is There Reckless Hatred For Female Superhero Movies And Shows Like ‘She-Hulk: Attorney At Law’?

The first episode of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law was released on Disney+ Hotstar this week and even ahead of its official release, the show was massively review bombed. People kept going to review websites and subjecting them to bad reviews. You see, these types of measurements in the quality of a show are highly specious when the show hasn’t even been released yet – or even screened for the public yet. So, what ends up happening is people using reviews to try to kill momentum on a show for their own personal/political reasons. This then sparks a backlash of positive reviews from supportive fans, all resulting in a review score that can’t be trusted from either side. It’s just one more dark side of the entire aggregate scoring system.

Sadly, this didn’t halt after the release of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. Even after the official release, the show kept receiving a bad rating for reasons that aren’t actually justifiable and unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that something like this has happened. We saw Ms Marvel having to deal with a similar situation before emerging victoriously successful. But, the question on all our minds still remains- Why are female-led shows being subjected to such a treatment? Why are they subjected to extreme standards of testing and hoop-jumping for them to be appreciated? And of course, how the hell is this fair?

Are The Supposed Reasons Behind These Bad Reviews Justified?

People claim that the very fact that Smart Hulk showed up in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law was weird and they didn’t like it but come on, I mean, they are trying to give you up, close and personal time with a character that has a deep-rooted history with Avengers. He is talking about his struggles with being a Hulk and, I don’t see how that can be wrong or awful, it’s the damn plot.

Further, people believe that the bad CGI is to be blamed for this but from what I and a lot of people could tell after watching the first episode, it doesn’t seem to be quite as bad as people claim for it to be. They also seem to be having a problem with the fact that much like Ms Marvel. She-Hulk just got everything handed down to her. She didn’t have to work hard for her skills and her powers like the other Avengers but what they don’t seem to realise is the fact that this is a new phase and what happened with her was visibly an accident. How can she be blamed for that?

It’s crazy how people are literally also calling She-Hulk: Attorney At Law preachy. I mean, just because she is going up on a platform that you love and talking about very real issues that you want to avoid, she is being preachy? It’s 2022 and a whole new phase of MCU, get with the damn programme or get out. If Bruce can digest She-Hulk being better than him without being a dick about it, so can you!

Why Are Marvel Fans Treating These Shows So Badly?

Marvel fans are showing reckless hate towards these movies and shows simply for being led by female superheroes like She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. It’s a visible fact because it only seems to be happening with such movies and shows. Marvel’s most recent TV releases Ms Marvel and Moon Knight were both subjected to similar review-bombing tactics, largely on the back of both series highlighting the inclusive expansions of exploring African and Middle Eastern cultures through heroes like Marc Spector and Kamala Khan.

Marvel’s Eternals movie also got review bombed for making LGBTQ+ representation part of its story, with trolls trying to push the larger assertion that Marvel is somehow “selling out” or “capitulating” to some kind of social justice or woke agenda by putting a spotlight on diversity and inclusivity. I really didn’t see this one coming. I mean, aren’t Marvel fans supposed to be better than that?

I don’t get why inclusivity is such a massive problem. When a woman is talking about how hard being a woman can actually be, she means it and it’s not meant to hurt your sentiments or to preach a message to you. Most people sitting in the audience are going as far as to even compare She-Hulk: Attorney At Law to Wonder Woman and it’s funny because comparing Marvel movies to DC movies has always been dissuaded by the same folks because they were “different worlds with different characters, backgrounds and set-ups”. Where did all that go, now? How come it’s suddenly all good when it’s your agenda?

To the people who are literally pushing this agenda like crazy individuals, all I have to say to you is, to grow up, look around, and accept the damn reality because it’s time. Marvel’s moving forward into the era of strong leads with inclusivity and support. You are the only ones left behind. It’s about damn time that you get with the program.
