‘She-Hulk’ Star Tatiana Maslany She Looks Forward To A Day When A Female Superhero Movie Won’t Be Big Deal. So Do We!

While I, of course, celebrate any positive representation of marginalised communities, I feel many times, that the representation is all we focus on which makes the plot and other aspects of the movie or show almost pointless. And many times, the people who are behind the project rely on the representation to rake in the positive reviews while there are so many other factors that go into making a good show or movie. She-Hulk star Tatiana Maslany states that she is looking forward to a time when having a female superhero and representing marginalised communities won’t be a big deal and I could not agree more.

Tatiana Maslany says that she finds the phrase “strong female lead” to be “reductive.” In the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, which debuts on Thursday, Maslany plays the most recent female superhero to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Maslany described the term “strong female lead” as frustrating in a recent interview because it lacks nuance. Maslany claims that it is simply a cliche and it shaves off all the complexities of a character. She further adds that nobody can fit inside of the box and the phrase is annoying as it implies that women are supposed to be grateful for the opportunity to be that.

Maslany continued by saying she anticipates a time when there won’t be as much of a fuss made over female superheroes. Maslany stated that she is very interested in a time when these marginalised voices get the chance to speak without it being like it being a big deal and they would be a norm in movies.

Maslany stated in the Guardian interview that she chose She-Hulk for its celebration and representation of female friendship.  She further added that the story felt feminine and that “there’s a girliness to it.” Maslany further added that while this term is used in a derisive manner, she found it to be refreshing and surprising. She went on to say that the celebration of female friendships within She-Hulk is what she finds fun.

Despite the fact that introduced female superheroes in the movies preceding Avengers: Infinity War, Brie Larson was the first Marvel actor to star in her own superhero film, Captain Marvel. With the debut of Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, and three Disney+ series with female leads over the past year, the MCU has, nonetheless, gotten more diverse.
