We’re Finally Getting Our First Indian Disney Princess, Thanks To Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha

Disney’s world has always been a point of fascination for every kid. With memories that define some of the best parts of our childhood, Disney has played an important role in creating the magical world of escapism. While every Disney story has had an impact on our childhood, the world of Disney Princess has a charm of its own. From tulle gowns to dreamy love stories, every Disney Princess had us dreaming bigger. But often, the idea of relatability seemed to go missing, with the absence of an Indian fairy tale. A story that feels closer to home. Finally, that childhood dreaming is turning into reality. For the first time ever, Disney will welcome an Indian princess to its universe.

Helmed by Bride and Prejudice filmmaker–Gurinder Chadha, Disney will expand its roster of leading ladies to add an Indian name. According to Deadline, the filmmaker will again collaborate with husband/screenwriter Paul Mayeda Berges, with who she previously worked on Bend It Like Beckham, which by the way is one of my favourite films.

Chadha will not only direct but will also co-produce the musical with Lindy Goldstein. Sources also revealed that Sean Bailey, President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production will oversee the project. The makers have kept further details under wrap.

Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha has many successful films in her kitty. The filmmaker is known to nurture the bond between India, and the west through her stories. In terms of musicals, the filmmaker also curated a musical version of her famous film–Bend It Like Beckham.

While the right approach to representation is still a question for us, Chadha’s expertise in marinating India with the west has been a treat to watch. This exciting new collaboration is set to expand the Disney-verse with a new addition of an Indian princess. Currently the roster consists of fifteen princess.
