Daadi Ki Shaadi Review: Neetu Kapoor, Kapil Sharma Film Is An Awkward Family Entertainer With Nothing Memorable!
hauterrfly Rating: 1 / 5

Daadi Ki Shaadi has hit theatres, and it has been watched, but at what cost? The film stars Neetu Kapoor, Kapil Sharma and Riddhima Kapoor in lead roles. Directed by Ashish R Mohan, the comedy-drama is all about the relationship between a mother and her child. Well, you can just think about Baghban here for once. But the film is all about the extent to which an Indian family can go to instead of just simply communicating their feelings. This thought really hits hard by the end of the film, which, BTW, I had a hard time watching. Here’s a review of Daadi Ki Shaadi.

Plot

Tony Kalra (Kapil Sharma) is a bachelor, and his joint family is desperately waiting for his wedding. They come across the perfect girl, played by Sadia Khateeb. But on their engagement day, the girl’s grandmother shares a shocking post on “Facelook.”In the middle of the ceremony, the girl’s little brother announces that their grandmother, Vimla (Neetu Kapoor), is getting married. Tony’s father cancels the wedding, but the man doesn’t give up. He somehow joins the girl’s family on their trip to Simla, where Vimla resides alone. In no time, it reveals that the social media post was just an auto-correct mistake, and in reality, she was not getting married.

However, Vimla decides not to disclose the truth and simply plays along. This is solely because all three of her children had visited Simla after many years, and she wanted to spend some good time with them. But Vimla soon discovers that her children had now changed and there was no love left between them. Add Baghban reference here! Riddhima Kapoor plays Neetu Kapoor’s on-screen daughter in Daadi Ki Shaadi. There is a lot of chaos that happens to teach the kids a lesson, and amid all this, Tony Kalra has been awkwardly placed in the narrative.

Narrative

Daadi Ki Shaadi attempts to be a love story, a social commentary, a family drama and of course, comedy. But it ends up becoming frustrating. The narrative is absolutely mindless when it comes to characters and a story. The most awkward bit is Tony’s character and his placement in the situation. There is a serious lack of any emotions in the story, and it’s felt throughout the running time. Why would a man who is not even engaged to a woman, accompany her family on a trip that’s way too personal. But the narrative only gets weirder. The situational comedy hardly lands, and one finds oneself laughing at the utter immaturity of the plot.

Performances

The other pillar that holds a film together is the performance. However, in Daadi Ki Shaadi, there was not one single standout performance worthy of saving the disaster. Neetu Kapoor very elegantly holds her character as Vimla. But the actor deserved a much better script and character because this one was devoid of any emotion. Kapil Sharma reminded me of his performance in the Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon franchise. Kapil Sharma does not exactly fit here as the character that adds romance and charm to the narrative. His one-liners hardly hits the right spots, this time.

Riddhima Kapoor was too stiff for her character. Yograj Singh’s character as the army chief fails to express. However, there were some supporting characters that occasionally worked for me. That’s me looking for a silver lining.

Daadi Ki Shaadi fails to be family entertainer or a good time at the movies. There music in the film is not memorable nor the jokes. The narrative is pointless and dated, and there is nothing refreshing in the story. Daadi Ki Shaadi is currently running in theatres.
