Crew Review: Tabu, Kareena Kapoor, Kriti Sanon’s Heist Comedy Is Too Hot To Handle, Diljit Dosanjh Left Us Breathless
hauterrfly Rating: 3.5 / 5

Have you ever watched a chick flick meets crime drama? Put your seatbelts on and get ready to take off on the ride of a lifetime with Crew ft. Tabu, Kareena Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. This trio of leading actresses play flight attendants in the heist comedy directed by Rajesh Krishnan. Produced by Ekta Kapoor, Rhea Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Digvijay Purohit under the banner of Balaji Motion Pictures and Anil Kapoor Films & Communication Network, Crew hit the theatres across India on Friday, March 29. This film also stars Kapil Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh in supporting roles. Bhai, what an unapologetically funny, feminist, heist comedy is this!

Plot Of Crew

Geeta Sethi (Tabu), Jasmine (Kareena Kapoor Khan), and Divya (Kriti Sanon) are flight attendants with Kohinoor Airlines owned by Vijay Mallya *cough cough* I mean, Vijay Walia (Saswata Chatterjee). When their salaries are not paid by the airline for 6 months (rings a bell? Yep, it’s the beer baron’s airline reference), the 3 air hostesses find another way to earn a quick buck by smuggling gold for their boss who happens to be the CEO of Kohinoor Airlines, Mr Mittal (Rajesha Sharma). But when the airline goes bankrupt, the trio learn that they smuggled their own money for Vijay Walia to flee abroad and live a cushiony life. It’s then that the crew decides to seek sweet revenge. Kapil Sharma has a special appearance in the film as Tabu’s Geeta Sethi’s husband while Diljit Dosanjh plays a customs officer, Jaiveer Singh, who happens to be childhood friends with Kriti Sanon’s Divya and her love interest.

Performances

Tabu as Geeta Sethi: Tabu is an absolute delight to watch. From the way she cusses to her dialogue delivery, everything screams perfection. She makes you hungry to watch her light up the big screen with her presence. The actress nails the comic timing like the pro that she is. It’s no secret that Tabu is a skilled actress but her sexy and sassy avatar in Crew adds to her overall appeal. Apart from hilarious dialogues, Tabu was the mom of the crew and kept the girls in line. But at the same time, she’s the middle-class mom who we all know (even though she hardly ever dresses like a middle-class mom), the one who loses her marbles when she has to pay $100 for a cup of coffee to pull off a 3000 crore heist!

Kareena Kapoor Khan as Jasmine: Remember the piece written by Otherwarya in The Dirty Magazine for Kareena Kapoor where she said that she simply wants to “sink” her teeth into Bebo’s “plump flesh”? All I’m going to say is that I totally absolutely felt that. Bebo looks beyond stunning in the film, and with her top-notch acting, it’s practically impossible to tear your eyes off of her. Not only did Bebo look her sultry best but she made you root for Jasmine and fall for the devilish twinkle in her eyes when she’s about to commit a crime. This flight attendant with kleptomaniac tendencies will remind you of the one odd person we all know who fakes it for social media only to land in trouble for it later.

Kriti Sanon as Divya: The last time I met Kriti Sanon, I couldn’t get over how gorgeous she is IRL and how long her legs are. But she’s not just some leggy blonde flirting with the customs officer to save her crew. There’s more to Kriti’s Divya, the topper of the class and the flight attendant with a commercial pilot license. Kriti eases into the role and levels up the sexiness and the sassiness of the crew with her performance as she creates the perfect balance between comedy and drama.

Diljit Dosanjh as Jaiveer Singh: Okay, someone needs to stop this sohna munda before he sets the screen on fire. If you love Diljit, you’re definitely not ready for this because this man will make you fall hard for him all over again. From this charming smile to his aww-dorable humour to his super-duper cute dialogue delivery and aag lagane wali comic timing, Diljit’s Jaiveer will make you wonder how Kriti’s Divya hasn’t already given him a green light. I’m up for a beer with Diljit’s Jaiveer *wink, wink*, if he’s over Divya!

Kapil Sharma As Geeta’s Husband: Kapil Sharma and Tabu’s chemistry is sizzling and his cameo is enough to make you want to see more of his romance with his flight attendant biwi. He’s the feminist husband we all want but he has us feeling things when he gives Tabu’s Geeta some gyaan in a hilarious but gentle manner.

Supporting Cast

Rajesh Sharma, Saswata Chatterjee and the rest of the supporting cast also manage to nail their punchlines and comic timing. For a heist comedy, it’s surprising how not a single actor fell behind on the comic timing and delivered a banger performance.

Verdict: A Wild Ride With A Smooth Landing

First of all, Tabu, Kareena Kapoor and Kriti Sanon are too hot to handle in this wild ride of a film. And to add to it, Diljit Dosanjh turns up the heat and how! But wait, that’s not all. We need to talk about Tabu and Kapil Sharma’s chemistry. Who knew Tabu demonstrating flight safety information could be so hawt? I cannot say it enough that Tabu, Kareena, and Kriti look sexy, sultry and they are fluent in sass and sarcasm. Rajesh Sharma made this film soar high with his naturally hilarious performance but Saswata Chatterjee was wasted. For an actor of that calibre, he could’ve done so much more to uplift the script and the story but uff, ab kya karen, it’s a film made for women to shine and with 3 heroes like Tabu, Bebo and Kriti, who care about the underdeveloped villain.

As if the kickass acting wasn’t enough, the film is full of references when it comes to characters with the biggest example being Kingfisher, I mean Kohinoor Airlines and Saswata’s Vijay Walia (not Mallya). His character’s likeness to the beer baron was impossible to ignore. The absolutely hilarious and memorable dialogues levelled up the script. And I kid you not, I’ve walked out of the theatre and used Tabu’s dialogues. Whoever wrote her dialogues deserves a raise, koi zaroorat nahi hai gajra pehen ke linking road pe khade hone ki! This chick flick is an absolute riot and the fact that we finally have a banger film led by 3 women who successfully pull off a heist is the most feminist thing I’ve seen Bollywood do so far. Kudos to Ekta Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor for pulling off this women-centric film. At no point did I have to put up with sexist humour, and the sisterhood and girl talk humour is what has my heart. Furthermore, Rhea Kapoor’s top-notch styling of all the stars is hard to miss. Someone give this girl an award for it already!

Now, speaking of what does not work for this film is the fact that while the crew of Tabu, Kareena and Kriti have a kickass character arc and can be seen growing and learning throughout the film, the same doesn’t happen for the antagonist Vijay Walia played by Saswata Chatterjee. The fact that we were all left thirsting for the girl gang and hungry to see more of the celebrated actor Saswata, is proof that he was beyond underused. We wanted to see more of this Vijay Mallya rip-off. The pace of the film was another downside. The first half kicks off with loads of humour and a totally wild ride, but the flight gets bumpy in the second half. That’s not all, the climax seems to be rushed. Using a few more minutes to keep the viewers hooked to the big screen to witness the final heist would’ve been a better idea. The fact that it wasn’t well thought through and lacked the usual charm of Crew was rather heartbreaking.

However, I cannot help but love that the subplot of Kriti Sanon and Diljit Dosanjh’s romance did not take off and steal the limelight from her character’s purpose in the storyline. Kareena Kapoor being single was not justified and why should a woman have to justify her relationship status? Tabu’s husband’s restaurant business wasn’t given a separate subplot which helped. All of that is what helped me rate this film 3.5 out of 5 stars. ICYMI, Crew is currently in theatres and remember what Tabu and Bebo said to Kriti, date ke saath jaoge toh samaan bahar rakhna. And hold back on the foundation, foundation hai time machine nahi!
