Movies are subjective. You may like a movie, I may not. That’s perfectly okay, as long as one’s opinions are expressed with respect and reason. Recently, Alia Bhatt and Sharvari’s Alpha, directed by Shiv Rawail, hit theatres. Backed by YRF, the first female-led spy thriller from the universe received several criticisms on social media; however, the leading ladies were praised for their performances. Now, amid this, Alpha’s review by Kamal R. Khan has grabbed eyeballs, not for its constructive criticisms, but for using indecent language to make the review sound funny. But is it funny? Read on.

Alpha’s Review By Kamal R. Khan

A review of Alia Bhatt’s film Alpha was posted on YouTube by Kamal R. Khan. In this, he shared his thoughts on the spy-action thriller. While explaining the story of Alpha, Kamal R Khan went on to talk about the bikini scenes. He said, “Alia bikini mein bhi ekdum bacchi dikhti hai, kyunki na toh headlights hai, na toh bumper hai“, which is roughly translated to, “Alia looks like a kid in the bikini, because neither does she have headlights nor bumper.” On several occasions, he also addressed Alia Bhatt as “Tingi.” Well, these things may have got him a few laughs in the comment section, but the truth is that there is nothing funny about such language. And it’s high time these things are called out!

Criticising a film, an art piece, is everyone’s right, but one needs to maintain a level of decency while expressing their opinions. Some boundaries should be maintained, but clearly, it’s a concept lost on some. A fair criticism of a movie is acceptable, even an actor’s work in the film is open for discussion, but this kind of objectification or degrading language in the name of humour is completely unacceptable. This remark in question just doesn’t cross the boundaries of criticism; it also reflects the disturbing mindset that views women as visual spectacles who are expected to conform to the narrow beauty standards. A film review filled with misogyny, objectification, s*xism or mockery over a person’s height is hardly a criticism. Is this really what sharing opinions on a film should stand for? What pleasure do people derive from shaming women on their bodies? Do they ever stop to think before using such words for an actress, or any woman, for that matter? And for those entertaining such remarks, do better!
