Indian Twitter Is Salty Over Aamir Khan’s Ghar Jamaai Advertisement. Why Are We So Opposed To Any Kind Of Change?

I feel like Indian Twitter is currently going through its Karen phase. Every time I go on there, the Indian Tweeple have chosen to get upset over something new and I bet if there was a manager, they would want to speak to him/her. And with the rise of boycott culture, this is as prevalent as ever. And if you ask what upset Indian Twitter today then it is this advertisement by AU small finance bank featuring Kiara Advani and Aamir Khan who is currently on the receiving end of unending Twitter hate thanks to a statement he may or may not have made back in 2016.

So why did this ad upset the Tweeple? The ad features Kiara Advani and Aamir Khan as newlyweds who are just going back after the bidaai. They are discussing how neither of them cried during the bidaai. Then it is revealed that Aamir Khan is breaking patriarchal norms and is a ghar jamaai. Now to be honest, I personally found the normalisation of a ghar jamai pretty refreshing over the stereotypical comic way the concept has always been portrayed. But Twitter had other plans as many are upset after their Hindu sentiments have been hurt.

Now I don’t know about you guys but I am really enjoying the modern and feminist liberties people have taken with their weddings in recent times. And haven’t society and customs always evolved as time passes? We don’t do things the way our forefathers did and the coming generations won’t do things the way we do. But somehow, many in India are hell-bent on holding on to the same patriarchal and regressive ideals which aren’t even relevant in today’s day and age. And not only do these people refuse to be progressive, but they also pull down anyone else who does too.

I don’t see the issue with this ad, to be honest. Just because things have always been done a certain way, doesn’t mean we have to continue in the same manner. Yes, kanyadaan is very important to Hindu weddings and a common ritual is done even today. However, if a couple chooses to go the ghar jamaai route, tumko kya? Why and how is it your problem? It is important for these people to understand that these rituals come from a time when feminism as a concept was non-existent and patriarchy was how the world functioned. And while patriarchy is still prevalent, changes are being made in the way people see women and women’s status in the world. Doesn’t that beg for some alterations in these age-old rituals too? And to be honest, if you are choosing to be offended by anything in this advertisement, be offended by the casting. Why do we have Aamir and Kiara as a couple here? The age gap here is what people should be focusing on, if you ask me.
