‘A Thursday’ Review: Yami Gautam’s Portrayal Of A Kidnapper Will Have You Sitting On The Edge Of Your Seat

I believe a good film is one that stays with you after you’ve left the theatre and A Thursday does. This thrilling drama will send chills down your spine as you watch the layers of the story unfold. Directed by Behzad Khambata and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, this thriller drama stars Yami Gautam, Neha Dhupia, Karanvir Sharma, Dimple Kapadia and Atul Kulkarni. And get this- A Thursday is releasing on a Thursday, 17 February on the OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar.

The Plot

A Thursday is a stark reminder of the Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher starrer A Wednesday with a similar plotline. But unlike A Wednesday, this movie has nothing to do with bombs but it is about aam aadmi, in this case, aam aurat who is a victim of the system who goes on to take drastic steps to make a statement and obtain justice. The story of A Thursday revolves around a seemingly innocent playschool teacher, Naina Jaiswal, played by Yami Gautam who takes 16 of her students hostage. And her demands get increasingly confusing as she goes from asking the pregnant cop, ACP Catherine Alvarez (played by Neha Dhupia), to get her to speak to police office Javed Khan, played by Atul Kulkarni to wanting to speak to the Prime Minister of the country, played by Dimple Kapadia. While Naina Jaiswal does ask for money but that is clearly not the motive behind the hostage situation. It seems the motive lurking underneath all her demands has a lot to do with her life but the answers are not easy to find. While the police officers race against time to find out why Naina Jaiswal is doing what she’s doing, her demands get difficult to fulfil but what happens when this playschool teacher turned kidnapper starts killing students?

Cast And Characters of A Thursday

I’ll put this in one sentence – the casting could not have been better. Yami Gautam’s role of an endearing playschool teacher turned sinster kidnapper honestly had me on pins and needles till the very end. She manages to portray Naina Jaiswal’s anger and frustration that is deep-seated. Yami gave a rather power-packed performance as the female protagonist Naina Jaiswal. While Atul Kulkarni’s casting was perfect as he played the role of a troubled cop. We’re all aware that Neha Dhupia was actually pregnant when she shot for this role of a pregnant police officer and she managed to amp it up with her powerful performance. While Dimple Kapadia and Karanvir Sharma had small roles, they played significant characters and delivered impactful performances.

Final Verdict

I’ll be brutally honest here, some thrills of this thriller are rather predictable and so are some twists and turns. While it has its fair share of flaws, A Thursday is high on emotions and has a feel-good vibe. If you overlook the flaws, this film is a thrilling emotional roller coaster that has you biting your nails. Even with some predictable plot holes, this film makes for an engaging suspenseful watch that has you wondering why Naina Jaiswal is doing what she’s doing.

Though the demand to speak to the Prime Minister may seem a little extreme and rather ambitious, once you know the end, it’ll all kind of make sense. IMHO A Thursday is the kind of feel-good movie that you do not want to miss out on.
