Women On Reddit Share Their Subtle Acts Against Patriarchy, We Love The Rebellion!

Patriarchy has been ruling over us for a very long time. It hasn’t just affected women, but it has also made men do and say things that they wouldn’t if it weren’t for the patriarchy. Now what I mean by this is, that patriarchy is so deeply rooted within us that we can’t look past it unless we unlearn it. Women have been the hunting dogs of it from the beginning of time, but there are a few rebels who make sure to call out patriarchy each chance they get!

What is your subtle middle finger to the patriarchy?

So in a recent Reddit discussion women on Reddit talked about their way of showing a subtle middle finger to the patriarchy in their daily lives. Understandably, you can’t change anything and everything that has to do with patriarchy, but given that the system runs so deep in our daily lives there is no way but to break it for yourself on your own.

Some women found empowerment in reclaiming their names, refusing to take up their partner’s surname after marriage. Now you might think that these are smaller steps almost negative but these are the ones that make women feel like they are trapped into society and its expectations. Thanks to the patriarchy. Along with that other women talked about embracing their natural beauty and not thinking about what other people say about their hair, body or how they live their lives.

Women also talked about choosing male-dominated fields for work as well as having and keeping hobbies that are usually called masculine for women. Some users talked about having septum piercings, not shaving their legs, and not wearing make-up to take the ideal image of how women should be away from the norms of such patriarchal values.

This one was one of my absolute favourites, one of the women talked about choosing women for anything and everything that they need help with. For instance when they’re choosing doctors healthcare professionals or gym trainers. Being able to trust your own gender and being able to trust them more than the other gender is what most women discussed.

Some women even discussed the way they changed their writing style when it comes to corporate emails where women would usually be expected to talk softly and very formally, men on the other hand would talk very to the point and not apologize at times.

A woman also talked about being a school teacher and the custom that she follows that helps her slice the patriarchy with small yet piercing effects is that whenever a child gets sick she causes dad first before calling the mother. Some women also talked about holding the door for men, paying the bills, refusing their maiden names, refusing to have their partner’s name asked every time they go somewhere.

Now these are small, yet important things that help you as a woman make your own rules on how you look at certain things in your life and feel empowered. Given that there are always going to be arguments and discussions about the effect of patriarchy around us, it is soothing to know that there are some things that you do for yourself to feel better about your life, especially if it in any way helps smash the patriarchy!
