On Women’s Day, DU Female Students Locked In Hostels To “Protect” Them On Holi. Boys Roamed Free!

Women have to keep looking over their shoulders in their day-to-day lives and especially on Holi. The phrase ‘bura na maano, Holi hai’ is severely misused by men on this festival where they inappropriately touch women and young girls, and audaciously ask them to not mind it because it’s all fun and joke! It is these predators that need to be locked in their houses on Holi so that the women can freely enjoy the festival. But in what comes as a shocking piece of news from Delhi University (DU), the female students have been locked inside their hostels to prevent them from playing Holi because it is not safe for them!

As per reports, a circular was issued on March 2 which said that girls cannot leave their hostels till 6 PM. The circular also said that visitors can also not visit the girls. How ironic is that on March 8, which is International Women’s Day, these girls are locked up in their hostels to protect them from miscreants that creep out on Holi?

The female students have launched protests at this regressive rule from the university. They were also seen shouting slogans and said that this circular was quite uncalled for. The DU proctor Rajni Abbi said that they issue such circulars every year for the safety of the students. She also said that because the female students began protesting, they are allowing women to go out by signing an undertaking that they are stepping out at their own responsibility.

This allows the university administration to very conveniently raise their hands from the safety of their own female students. Instead of looking to and making it a safe space for them, they decided that locking girls up is a solution to this problem. Interestingly, no restrictions are imposed on male students. So, they trust their male students that they will not cause a ruckus when let out to play Holi. But want their female students to stay locked up if they want to feel safe. Such a perfectly sexist solution!
