Over the past few years, we’ve been witnessing the rise of the boycott trend for almost every other film. Every time a film is about to release, someone raises some lame or irrational reason to “boycott” it. Now in most cases, this trend doesn’t really take off apart for trending on Twitter for a few hours. But in some cases, it leads to a serious issue and lands the film in controversy. The one film that recently came under the radar is Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham starrer Pathaan. But there’s more to this controversy than just an orange bikini and the song titled ‘Besharam Rang’.

On Deepika Padukone’s birthday, I was scrolling through her filmography when I realised something. It looks like the boycott brigade loves Deepika Padukone. No, I’m serious. It’s no joke. Ever since 2013, almost all major films starring Deepika have landed in major controversies and have garnered attention from the boycott brigade starting with Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela.

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh starrer Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela was initially titled ‘Ramleela’ and religious groups protested against the film claiming that it was misleading as it had nothing to do with Ramlila. In fact, several cases were also filed against the film for hurting Hindu sentiments after which the name of the film was changed. It also ran into trouble with the Kshatriya community for using their community’s name in the movie after which that too was changed. However, the film was banned in UP.

Bajirao Mastani

Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra starrer Bajirao Mastani also came under fire for allegedly portraying the Maratha general Peshwa Bajirao in poor light and for “distorting” history. BJP workers protested against the film and several shows of the film were cancelled in Pune. The descendants of Bajirao, Mastani, as well as Kashibai, alleged that the songs ‘Malhari’ and ‘Pinga’ from the film distorted history as both of them showed the actresses wearing midriff-baring sarees. Further, a dialogue was called “vulgar” and the descendant sought the removal of the content as well as other objectionable sequences. A case was also filed against the film’s release in the Bombay High Court which was rejected by the Court.

Padmavaat

Deepika Padukone’s film Padmavaat also landed in trouble for allegedly portraying Rajput queen Padmavati in a bad light while the Muslim community and leaders accused the makers of misrepresenting Alauddin Khilji. The film set was attacked several times and was set ablaze as well. Ahead of the release, there were several protests and riots calling for a ban. Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone also received death threats. However, the film was banned in Malaysia for portraying a Muslim leader in a negative light.

Chhapaak

The troubles for Deepika Padukone’s films increased around the time of the release of her film Chhapaak. During the JNU protest against the attack on students in the University as well as the protests against the passage of CAA, the actress joined the protestors which angered several people. Soon after #BoycottChhapaak trend picked up on social media. Later, some false news reports claimed that the makers changed the name and religion of the attacker in the film who was Muslim in real life to Hindu in reel life. Soon after the news made headlines, political leaders got involved and slammed the film for the same but the gossip was later debunked by journalists who watched the special screening of the film.

Gehraaiyan

Deepika Padukone’s intimate scenes in her 2022 film Gehraaiyan were severely criticised. Trolls also took to Twitter to attack the actress and celebrate the “failure” of the film. She was also attacked for wearing bold outfits while promoting the film. And now, there’s the orange bikini from Pathaan song ‘Besharam Rang’ that has come under the radar and the actress has been slammed for wearing a “saffron” bikini.

All of this has us wondering why the boycott brigade is fond of Deepika Padukone. Over the last few years, the actress and her films have been attacked for the most absurd reasons. From baring her midriff to doing intimate scenes to wearing an orange bikini, the trolls seem to be obsessed with anything and everything that Deepika does. And she has been time and again come under fire for some really lame reason. But logic kahan hai?
