Vidya Balan Says We Judge Women Far More Than We Judge Men. Ain’t That True!

Being a girl who has a majority of male friends is sure fun when you’re with them, but not as much when you’re judged because you’re the only girl amongst five guys. Even though my family knows who I am with, where I am, and what I am doing, it’s the society that judges you. I remember this time I was hanging out with five of my best friends (all guys), wearing a dress, and the looks I got from the people on the road—unbelievable! One of them knew my mother and ended up calling her to tell her how she saw me on the road, hanging out with five guys. My mom’s reply was hilarious. “I know. Any other updates on MY daughter?” she said! But what’s not funny, and even Vidya Balan would concur, is that women tend to get judged far more harshly than men.

I mean, think about it. Sure, my mom and I had a great laugh when I returned home. But I couldn’t shake the thought: Do men have to go through this too? They don’t get calls from random long-lost relatives informing them that their son is roaming about with girls. And that brings me to my question, why do we so easily judge our women?

Recently, in a conversation, Sherni actress Vidya Balan also echoed the same sentiment that women are judged way more than men are. She said, “Maybe men don’t get judged at all.”

When asked about why that is the case, she added, “That’s because this is a new reality for us where we are not only handling the home and our families but we are also going out and conquering the world.”

To add to this, I think women are judged more because the patriarchal society perhaps wants to see us fail, prove to us that we women can’t do it all. And what better way to demotivate and discourage us from breaking our shackles than putting us down with harsh criticism and unfair judgement, right?

If what Vidya Balan says is indeed the reason, then I think it is time to accept this new reality. We need to normalize basic things—whether it is a woman hanging out with multiple men or whether she is going out to achieve her career goals. We are living in the 21st century, where women are stronger than they have ever been.  If a woman wants to work, dress up in a particular way, meet a particular set of people, or stay out till late at night that is her choice. And judging her on the basis of that is unfair and unjustified.
