Vidya Balan Talks About Exercising ‘The Expression of Non-Expression’ For Sherni. And She Had Us Impressed!

I’m not a movie person, however, I do occasionally fire up any OTT platforms on my laptop and binge on some eye-catching movies. The one thought that pops into my head every time I watch something that requires the actor to get out of their comfort zone is, how do they figure out when to emote a certain way and when to hold it back? Now I know, they are professionals and they know what they are doing. But that doesn’t change the fact that it leaves me hella impressed. Since we are speaking of expressions, the one person that comes to my mind (other than Kajol) is Sherni star Vidya Balan. Her acting skills and the way she emotes on screen are something that is globally acclaimed and critically appreciated.

From watching worldwide classics like Godfather, Fight Club to watching Bollywood classics like Anand, Gully Boy, Barfi, I’ve been in awe of the actors who’ve mastered the art of expression. In her recent movie, Sherni, her character was unlike any other. The character, Vidya Vincent, as Vidya Balan puts it, has a lot of layers. She is a woman of few words and lets her actions do the talking, which to put frankly is unlike Vidya Balan’s own personality.

In an interview, she opened about the character saying that “The character of Vidya Vincent had a lot of interesting layers, which was something I’d never portrayed before. Her actions spoke louder than her words, in a very obvious way. I had to exercise the expression of non-expression. My expressions have to convey what I am feeling. There are people who are completely inscrutable, and I guess this character is one of them. It was a different kind of experience as an actor.”

Even when asked about how it was like to prepare for such a character, she agreed to the character being a tough one. She added, “She is reticent, she doesn’t say much, and she doesn’t smile much, which is not me as a person, nor it is like any of the characters that I’ve played so far. I’ve played characters, all of them strong, but strong in every other way. Whereas Vidya’s got a very strong will, but she doesn’t like to engage with the world.”

Now that Sherni is being streamed on Amazon Prime Video, the charm of Vidya Balan and her acting is doing its work right. The movie has received a great response from the critics as well as the audience. And there’s no doubt that Vidya Balan’s acting has become the talk of the town.

Seeing a woman getting appreciated for her work and her skills is the highlight for me. What I love about  Vidya Balan is that she is unapologetically herself, she has never let what people talk about her size, looks, and other aspects of her life come in the way of her career. And that in my opinion is what makes her such a force to reckon with.
