Vaani Kapoor Wants To Do Films That Don’t Treat Women Like A Flower Vase. And We Want To See Such Films Too!
Bollywood is like Bunty ka sabun… ekdum slow. So when there’s any revolution or ideological change that happens in other film industries around the world, Bollywood is still waiting for the memo to load on its Internet Explorer. Which means it is still writing its female characters like wallflowers, or not writing them at all kyunki hero ke saamne nacchna hi toh hai. Who cares about how it is written? Fortunately, the winds of change have begun to blow, and there are finally stories for women, sometimes by women, that are getting made. And this is giving actresses like Vaani Kapoor a chance to do the roles they really want to do.

The actress, who made her debut opposite the late Sushant Singh Rajput in YRF’s Shuddh Desi Romance, was last seen in War in a very small role. Her only lead role so far has been in Befikre, opposite Ranveer Singh, and that wasn’t all that well received, with particularly harsh criticism levelled against her character. While all three women that Vaani played were in some ways the versions of the women of today, they didn’t exactly make a mark. No wonder the actress is keen on upping her game and looking for roles that demand more of her as an actor.
In a recent interview, she said, “As a woman, I want to do more films that celebrate women, their lives and decisions. I have been fortunate that in my short career span, I have got films like Shudh Desi Romance, Befikre and War that have highlighted some brilliant aspects of being a woman. They showed how women are free-spirited, ambitious, resilient and strong.”

Credit OTT for it, or the audience’s favourable reception of movies with female leads, but the market is finally willing to give strong female characters a chance on the Box Office as well as on streaming shows and direct-to-digital films. And that has clearly emboldened Vaani Kapoor to go for films where women aren’t mere showpieces for aesthetic value.
“Luckily, today, we are part of a generation that’s extremely forward-thinking and they want to see films where a woman is not treated as a flower vase. I’m thankful to be working in an era where people want to see more from a woman than just look stunningly gorgeous on screen,,” she said.
And we agree, these are also the kind of movies we want to see, and root for actresses like her to get a chance to work in them. 2021 looks to be quite the year for Vaani Kapoor, as she has three movies coming up, and all are highly anticipated ones with quite the range. She’ll be starring opposite Akshay Kumar in Bell Bottom, which is reportedly going to release in June this year. She’ll also be seen in Shamshera with Ranbir Kapoor and in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, with Ayushmann Khurrana.
