Twitter Is Pissed With Starplus For Negative Portrayal Of Surrogacy, And Rightly So

Surrogacy and adoption are two words that are still taboo in India. Let’s all agree on the fact that when it comes to being aware of these terms and the procedure, we Indians are completely clueless. Now, I’m not denying that things aren’t changing, they sure are but the problem is that the change is not taking place fast enough – and one of the main reasons behind it (according to me) is the movies and shows that are made around it. Most of the time, these movies and shows portray surrogacy and adoption in such a way that it actually dissuades people from opting for such procedures. Just take the instance of this show on Starplus called Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin where the main characters including an IPS officer, a doctor, and an educated housewife mock the procedure of surrogacy and the laws around it. And to say Twitter is pissed would be an understatement.

In fact, desi Twitterati has now taken upon themselves to start a trend – ‘Starplus Mocks Laws’ – to point out the problematic things that the shows on the channel have pulled in the name of plots. They’ve especially singled out the show Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin which has been making a joke out of surrogacy laws and showing it in a bad light.

One of the users in the ‘Starplus Mocks Laws’ trend on Twitter wrote, “So surrogate mother want to get intimate with the genetic father of the baby that’s why doing all this, it’s the message for society surrogacy ka meaning hi destroyed” and what the user has pointed is extremely problematic. Because in India, we still believe that for surrogacy the surrogates need to have sex with the husbands and this is not true, they can be inseminated artificially now. Spreading such wrong messages has a very regressive impact on society and how much ever we’re becoming open to the idea of such procedures will go back to square one.

Another user directly addressed Starplus and wrote, “You’ve hurt the sentiments of mothers. You’ve insulted motherhood and womanhood. How dare you show such illegal and insensitive stuff on national television.” And they are not the only ones who’ve commented. Here are some others who have commented:

As much as we might hate it, the fact is that our society gets heavily inspired by movies and shows. And so when they’re the ones who are mocking and spreading incorrect information about procedures like surrogacy, adoption, abortion, and more, the audience will see these procedures as taboo and wrong.
