Twitter Hails Supreme Court Of India For Landmark Abortion Rights Verdict. But Marital Rape Definition Irks Some Men…
Social media platforms are a great way indeed to update yourselves with trending topics in the world, especially Twitter. And since India is currently witnessing the most historic decision by the Supreme Court on abortion rights, our Twitterati has to talk about it. In fact, the decision is being hailed by the users and clearly, it deserved all the praise. For the unversed, the Supreme Court in its interpretation of the Medical Termination Of Pregnancy Act, 1971, has legalised abortion rights for every woman regardless of marital status. Following this pathbreaking verdict, Twitter users have come forth to share their opinions on this and most of them are positive.
Firstly, to start with the appreciation that this judgement has received. Clearly, Supreme Court highlighted and acknowleged every possible angle about the abortion rights of women. Stating the MTB Act, the SC upheld the rights of women on their bodies. Twitter users praised the court verdict and have called it “progressive”. I couldn’t have agreed more!
Very Progressive Step. I request for letter and Spirit implementation of MTP Act.

Another very important point that Supreme Court highlighted was recognising Marital Rape. The SC stated that many pregnancies happen in marriage due to marital rape which should actually be considered rape too. This much-needed acknowledgment coming from the highest court of justice in our country will definitely pave way for more discussions on this in the near future. And this is being talked about highly by Twitter users.
In a landmark judgment, SC has recognised “Marital Rape” for the purpose of MTP Act 1971. Truly a big day for Indian Women 👏🏼 #abortion #MTPAct #landmarkjudment #sc #SupremeCourtOfIndia

They have acknowledged marital rape, and that itself is a step in the right direction.
But even under current law, a married woman can terminate her pregnancy till upto 20 week, provided she says her contraceptive failed.— Natasha Ramarathnam (@nuts2406) September 29, 2022
Paves way for the marital rape hearing. Here the court has significantly ruled that rape "includes" marital rape for the purposes of MTP Act. https://t.co/nJPnPzRXlo

In an era that includes Dobbs vs Jackson, and makes distinctions between the marital status of women who are raped – this excellent judgment on abortion under the MTP Act hits it out of the park. https://t.co/eGCXwCwxtf

Twitter users also made comparisons between India and The United States on the situation of abortion rights for women. Well, this verdict is a great example for the world.
I can't believe how well we're doing on this front esp wrt what's happening in the US. The MTP Act was v progressive as it is and this fills the biggest lacuna. https://t.co/JLLHtSpRVE

See I understand and respect opinions but only if they are backed up with strong facts. Marital Rape is a harsh reality and something that was never acknowledged until recent times. Women have been subjected to this because “consent” never became a matter of concern in many couples, again till recent times when there is some awareness on this. So, a court talking about it gave Marital rapes the validation it needed, but some people on Twitter for no reason came up with unnecessary opinions just to talk against this. One of the users talked about how “abusive women” can use the changes in the MTB Act against their husbands, and the way he framed it only shows that he is not well aware of the realities of the world,
So an abusive wife can have sex with her paramour, get pregnant and accuse her husband of marital rape which caused her forced pregnancy under MTP act. Good luck husbands stuck in abusive marriages with adulterous wives 😂😂😂

It’s not like that anyone can go an abort there are conditions under MTP act.
And every law takes time to get rid of loop holes. And we Indians are experts in exploiting it 😂🤣😂🤣😂

Until now, in order for a woman to claim most of her husband's property, it is necessary to be the mother of her husband's child, there will no longer be a need to be forced to become that mother on the basis of matrimonial rape 😂https://t.co/5TUoCldJco
