Kangana Ranaut Compared Herself To Meryl Streep, Gal Gadot. Mamma Mia, Here She Goes Again!

By  |

There’s no denying that Kangana Ranaut is one talented actress with quite a loyal fan following. To quote everyone who worked at Runway in The Devil Wears Prada, a million girls would kill for that kind of talent and clout. And yet, just as it pained us to watch Anne Hathaway’s Andie waste that gorgeousness by wearing that hideous skirt and carrying that foul briefcase for her interview, it pains us tremendously to watch Kangana squander all that good in favour of maintaining her Twitter persona. If the devil wears Prada, Kangana wears her narcissism on her sleeve. And this time, in her tweets, she has compared herself to the likes of Meryl Streep and Gal Gadot.

Now my usual reaction to Kangana Ranaut singing her own paeans is… “Mamma Mia. Here she goes again! My My! How can we desist her?” But this time, thoda zyada ho gaya, nahi?

Indian Twitter too, so accustomed to the gibberish that she often tweets, couldn’t help but purse their lips and fix Kangana with the same stare that Miranda Priestly fixes Andie with when the latter laughs about those two identical belts and calls fashion “stuff”. Sigh.

Look, NGL, I do think Kangana Ranaut is a talented actress. And self-appreciation isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But Kangana does it with the frequency of Miranda Priestly slamming her coat and bag on Andie’s desk in that montage. With that loud thud.

Yep, every time the Manikarnika actress wants to bring herself up, she does so by bringing another person down. Remember when she alluded that Diljit Dosanjh didn’t earn his fame through hard work? Or when she called Rihanna a porn singer and Urmila Matondkar a soft porn actress? Oh and the numerous times she and sister Rangoli Chandel have trashed Taapsee Pannu, Richa Chadha, Swara Bhasker and Alia Bhatt? So, pray, tell, how do we even respect her craft and person when she cannot accord the same to her fellow artists?

It is said that the true mark of greatness is humility. And if you’ve ever seen actors of a certain stature, like Meryl Streep, talk about themselves or their work, it’s always garbed in the best brand ever—Being Humble.

We’re not here to belittle Kangana Ranaut’s achievements. She does have range and she is a good actor. But every field has its class of veterans and while aspiring to be one of them is encouraged, such blunt self-comparison feels wrong. As many on Twitter pointed out, why not wait for your fans and audience to lavish such praise on you? In fact, going with the current trend, as a Meryl Streep fan, I take offence at this ridiculous comparison!

Meryl Streep is the most Academy Awards nominated actor, with 17 Best Actor nominations and four for Best Supporting Actor. She has won it thrice. Streep holds a similar honour for the Golden Globes too. She has multiple Lifetime Achievement Awards. Most people would call her the Amitabh Bachchan of Hollywood, but the fact of the matter is there is absolutely nobody like Streep. But if you want to know why Kangana Ranaut’s statements feel so insulting, imagine one of the younger actors in Bollywood comparing themselves to Amitabh Bachchan in the same tonality. Samjha?

Here’s the truth, then, Kangana.

Then again, Twitter agrees that to maybe, just maybe Gal Gadot is more in Kangana’s range in terms of number of films and years in the industry. And it ought to be a compliment for both. But then we’re reminded of Gal Gadot’s controversial political stance, which seem to align with Kangana’s ideologies, so I guess they could be friends? You know, like Wonder Woman and Cheetah were?

Anyhoo, I don’t think Kangana Ranaut is going to stop doing her thing. Her GPS location still indicates that she is living in galat faimi. So if there are any Oscars for narcissism, Kangana Ranaut will finally get to break Meryl Streep’s record. Have faith. Believe.
