Vidya Balan Says The Tag ‘Female-Driven Films’ Is Still Important Due To The Huge Disparity In Male and Female-Centric Movies

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a clear distinction in the kind of movies that are in Bollywood. The films are divided into two categories namely – male and female-driven films. You can distinctly see the focus getting shifted to women-centric films and bringing forward stories of women. And honestly, it’s high time this happened because for how long are we going to watch the hero beating the baddies to a pulp and save the woman? Or watch female actors as damsels in distress?

Bollywood actor Vidya Balan has worked in several female-centric films like Kahaani, Begum Jaan, Tumhari Sulu, Shakuntala Devi, Sherni and the recently released Jalsa. She has also been the one actor who is time and again associated with the term ‘female-driven’ films. In a recent interview, Vidya Balan revealed she feels films still need to be associated with this tag of female-centric films.

Vidya Balan Reveals Why We Still Need To Identity Suitable Films With The ‘Female-Driven’ Tag

In an interview with The Indian Express, the No One Killed Jessica actor said that we will need to stop specifying that it is a female-driven film when there are enough female-driven films made by the industry. She also said that there is a huge difference in the numbers of male and female-centric films and this is the reason why films need to be associated with the tag. Vidya went on to say that she has assumed the centre stage in her life and this is why she gravitates toward the stories she does.

She also spoke about the obvious gender disparity in our society and said that she asks people not to ‘be convinced by the ‘do jism ek jaan‘ phrase that people often use for newly married couples. Elaborating on the same, she said, “Do jism aur aadmi ki jaan, humari jaan rehti nahi hai“. How very true is that!

Women are more than often seen as arm candy both in the reel and real world. And films being one of the biggest influential factors, I hope female-driven films help in changing mindsets.
