Constance Wu Reveals She Attempted Suicide After Social Media Trolling In 2019 Over ‘Fresh Off The Boat’

While it may seem like it’s nothing but social media is a truly powerful tool. It can make us or it can break us. Over the years, we’ve witnessed several cases where people crossed all lines in order to get what they want from social media in the ways that they want. And we’ve seen it all go sideways. Apart from this, we also know about the trolls and everything that they can do to us. All the negativity that comes from social media often tends to take a toll on our mental health and that’s exactly what happened with actress Constance Wu. In 2019, there was a huge controversy with regards to her series Fresh Off The Boat which led to a severe social media backlash after which the actress deleted her Twitter account and now, she’s back and she’s got a lot to say.

After years of absence from social media, Constance Wu returned to Twitter and shared a long note explaining the reason behind deleting her accounts in 2019 and it will leave you shocked. On July 14, the actress shared a tweet revealing that she nearly lost her life due to social media and is scared of her return. The Crazy Rich Asians star revealed that after she shared “careless tweets” about the renewal of her TV show, she received severe criticism from people and was called a “blight” on the Asian American community. The actress said that the outrage and internet shaming got so severe that she began feeling awful about what she had said and she started feeling lilke she’s disgrace and doesn’t deserve to live anymore. Adding that a few DMs convinced her to end her life, she attempted suicide but was luckily found by a friend who took her to the ER and saved her life.

Speaking further Constance Wu shared that this incident taught her a lot about life and it’s because of this that she kept her career aside and focused on her mental health. She took the opportunity to point out that the Asian American Community often shies away from talking about mental health which is also why she has written her book Making A Scene.

FYI in May 2019, Constance Wu tweeted that she is upset about ABC renewing Fresh Off The Boat and also commented “dislike” on the renewal announcement post despite being the lead on the show. The actress later claimed that her tweets were “ill-timed” and that she was upset about the schedule of the renewal of the show as it is preventing her from doing another show that she was “really passionate about”. But she had also clarified that she’s happy about the renewal and apologise for her previous tweets. Now, we do understand that her behaviour wasn’t up to the mark but that does not really call for so much trolling and backlash. We’re all very attached to our favourite celebs but it’s important to understand that they’re their own person and have their own choices and taste and there’s nothing wrong with it. We cannot troll, shame and urge someone to commit suicide just because we don’t like what they’re saying.

Dear trolls, you may think that you’re just trying to make a point but please understand the fact that there are thousands and lakhs of other people like you who are also trying to make a point against this one person who is dealing with all the hate all alone. Do they really deserve to not live because of their personal choice? I don’t think so. Now, would be a good time to focus on our own lives instead of talking about others and shaming them for living their lives and making choices that they actually like. If Constance Wu is unhappy with Fresh Off The Boat renewal, she’s unhappy, why do we care? If she’s sorry about her behaviour, she is sorry and if she’s not, she’s not. Can we please just let her be?
