‘Bridgerton 2’ Star Simone Ashley Reveals Women Of Colour Have To Work “Twice As Hard.” We Need More South Asian Representation

Well, it’s not unknown that celebrities of colour face a lot more hurdles than the rest, and it’s a fact that has been open for one and all to know. There’s a lot more that actors and essentially people from the entertainment world have to go through, before their big break and one of which is breaking the stereotype and stepping out of the set brackets. And while many stars have come out in the open to speak about their journey, Netflix’s famous Bridgerton 2 star–Simone Ashley has now added her name to the list.

The ex-Sex Education alum and now the big Bridgerton star, Simone has indeed walked a long road to finally reach the top. Talking about her “hustle” before the big break, Simone opened her heart out during a recent appearance on the Reign With Josh Smith podcast. Speaking about the hard work, Simone explained how being a woman and especially a woman of colour requires some extra efforts and hardships till you make it.

Calling herself “a bit of a fighter,” Simone expressed how the show’s success and an overwhelmed response for her character–Kate Sharma brings “the most rewarding feeling.” And we’re so proud of her. This, indeed is a rare opportunity gifted to South Asian artists and we’re glad to see the lines blurring. Talking about which Simone also said, “the reality of how big of shift it is broadening this space, especially for South Asian women, and how still we’re so early within normalising all of this.”

Well, as much as the opportunity seems like a scintillating jackpot and mode of cultural appreciation, it can be at times quite tricky to balance the right kind of representation. After all, everyone here is too touchy about their culture. I mean remember the whole saree-lehenga debate around the Sex And The City reboot–And Just Like That? Woah, Bridgerton couldn’t afford to contribute to that. Agreeing to this, Bridgerton‘s Kate Sharma too expressed, how being a “spokesperson for Indian people” is a daunting responsibility.

We’re proud of our Kate Sharma and can’t wait to see more of her, alongside sir Anthony ofc *sigh* in the upcoming instalment of the show.
