Raj Kundra, Businessman And Husband To Shilpa Shetty, Arrested In Connection With Porn Films Case. Social Media Trolling Begins.

Late on Monday evening, breaking news declared that businessman Raj Kundra, who is also husband to actor Shilpa Shetty, has been arrested by the Mumbai Police. But it was perhaps the reason that stunned many. Turns out that the 45-year-old British Indian businessman and father of two was named as the ‘key conspirator’ in a case pertaining to creation of pornographic films and publishing them online through various apps. This alleged pornography case has reportedly been under investigation since earlier this year, and had led to the arrest of nine people, including model and actor Gehana Vasisth.

The arrest of Raj Kundra was confirmed in an official statement from Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale. The statement said that in February 2021, a case about the creation and publication of porn films through apps was registered with the Crime Branch Mumbai, and that Raj Kundra has allegedly been found to be the “key conspirator” in this. Kundra has therefore been booked under sections 420 (cheating), 34 (common intention), 292 and 293 (related to obscene and indecent advertisements and displays) of the IPC as well as under certain sections of the IT Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

What led Mumbai Police to Raj Kundra?

As mentioned in the statement, the case was under investigation since earlier in the year, when nine other persons were arrested in connection with an alleged pornography case. According to a report by TOI, the property cell then went on to arrest a man named Umesh Kamat, an executive of a UK production company called Kernin that was found to be involved in the case. A former employee of Raj Kundra, Kamat has been reportedly accused of uploading some eight or more obscene and pornographic videos that were shot by actor Gehana Vasisth on a social media app.

Further probe led the cops to suspect that Raj Kundra had a stake in Kernin. TOI also reported that according to sources, some WhatsApp chats between Kundra and his partners in relation to the porn content are key evidence in the case. Therefore, an arrest has been made. Following his arrest, Mumbai Police arrest one other person, a Ryan Tharp from Nerul, Navi Mumbai, in connection with the case.

Social media trolling begins

When celebrities and public personalities are caught in a controversy, social media trolling triggers faster than you can say “arrest”. As in the case of celebrity couples, there’s been a lot of the trolling aimed at Kundra’s Bollywood star wife Shilpa Shetty. A common filthy jibe doing the rounds uses the similar sounding Hindi words ‘yog’ and ‘sambhog’ to crassly mock the types of content that the fitness enthusiast wife makes compared to her allegedly shady husband. The actress has her film Hungama 2 releasing this Friday, but it looks like she is likely to be absent from any last minute promotions.

In addition to that, the singular line in Raj Kundra’s Twitter bio, as well as some old tweets have spurned further memes.

Thankfully, there were some sane voices on Twitter that got heard through all the trolling noise, as they made an important point about how the powerful in the entertainment industry continue to use their power for exploitation.

In a post #MeToo world, it is imperative that we handle these conversations with utmost seriousness while we hold out for the law enforcement authorities to do their jobs in pursuit of the truth and justice.
