Wrestlers Protests: United World Wrestling Condemns Situation, Threatens To Suspend India

The determination of the protesting wrestlers has to be lauded as they are not letting any adversary come in their way to seek justice. If anything, their resolve to get the Wrestling Federation of India chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, arrested has only gotten stronger. At this point, not only India but the world is watching the wrestlers protest against the removal of the WFI chief over sexual harassment allegations. Amid these rigorous protests, the Indian government has taken zero action to aid Vinesh, Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, the wrestlers who are leading the protests. And now, the United World Wrestling, the sport’s international governing body, has issued a strong-worded notice to India.

In their statement, the United World Wrestling wrote that they condemn the mistreatment and the detainment of the wrestlers by the police. They also urged the ‘relevant authorities’ to conduct an impartial investigation into this matter. They have also sought information about the Indian Olympic Association elective general assembly and said that India has a 45-day deadline for the same.

If India fails to provide information, then the UWW will have no choice but to suspend the WFI which will impact the wrestlers severely as they will have to play under a neutral banner. The UWW also informed India that in view of these protests, they already had relocated the venue of the Asian Championships from New Delhi to Dubai.

The wrestlers decided to take their protests a step further as they arrived in Haridwar to immerse their prestigious in Ganga. But they were stopped by farmer leader Naresh Tikait, and the wrestlers have given a five-day ultimatum to take action against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. As per reports, Sharan Singh recently spoke about the wrestlers’ move to immerse their medals and said that it was entirely their decision. He also said that the Delhi Police is investigating this matter, and if there is any truth to the allegations levelled, he shall be arrested.
