Women’s Organisations Slam Maha Govt’s Panel On Inter-Faith Marriages

The Shraddha Walkar murder case gave heat to conversations around many topics. Amidst all of it, inter-faith couples’ marriages also become a heated topic of debate. The death of a young woman, allegedly by her live-in partner once again alerted the authorities in cases related to crimes against women. And as a measure to control this, the Maharastra government came up with a panel to keep a track of all the inter-caste and inter-faith marriages. However, this received a severe backlash from women’s organisations, one among them is Stree Mukti Andolan Samiti.

The Maharashtra government’s panel came in view of the Shraddha Walkar murder case. The sole purpose of this committee is to provide assistance to women who are estranged from their families. The committee will keep a data on these marriages, and extend counselling to women in need, so they can reconcile with their families. Women’s organisations have found this panel very problematic and have slammed the whole idea of it. Pune’s Stree Mukti Andolan Samiti’s convenor, Kiran Moghe said that this step would just intrude with women’s rights to privacy. They called for immediate removal of the committee since it does not hold any legal ground. Kiran Moghe also said that the ministers forming such committees are absolutely unaware of the real issues and crimes that exist against women, as per the news. The women’s organizations also called for a protest against this committee where they would burn the official orders of the government. They also appealed to inter-faith couples to come and protest against this order.

Inter-caste and inter-faith marriages are still unacceptable decisions in our Indian society. It anyways creates a lot of difficulties in the life of a woman. So, the logic put together behind the formation of the committee that will dig up the lives of these couples is bound to raise various concerns. The committee will have officials on district levels to keep a check on couples marrying without their family’s will. Now if you think about it, access to such information can be misused too, and create unforeseen circumstances for the couple. It is necessary for the government to re-think the decision and take into consideration the various concerns and issues flagged by the women’s commission.
