Abir Al-Sahlani is a feminist icon who isn’t afraid to speak her mind. She recently gained major attention for challenging the far-right political movement in Europe. Who Is Abir Al-Sahlani?
Abir Al-Sahlani is a member of the European Parliament who reportedly represents the Swedish Centre Party in the Renew Europe Group. She was born in 1976 in Iraq into a political family. Her father, Faisal Sahlani, was imprisoned by Abu Ghraib. While having a conversation with Feminist, she stated that she didn’t grow up in Iraq but was exiled. She also mentioned that her father’s imprisonment deeply affected their family. After she found refuge in Sweden at 15, she started her political career. Abir Al-Sahlani graduated from Mid Sweden University and also holds a master’s degree from Stockholm University, according to Wikipedia. In 2007, she became a member of Sweden’s Center Party and in 2019, she was elected to the European Parliament. As per the website, she has been a part of the committee on Employment and Social Affairs, the European Parliament Intergroup on Disability, the European Parliament Intergroup on LGBT Rights, and the European Parliament Intergroup on Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas. She has been vocal about gender equality along with women’s s*xual and reproductive health and rights! Along with that, Abir Al-Sahlani also gained widespread attention for reportedly criticising the far-right political movement in Europe.
Her Take On Feminism
During her conversation with Feminist, Abir Al-Sahlani revealed that for her, feminism was all about freedom, equality before the law and power over one’s own body. She stated that there is a desire to give every woman and girl the same rights, opportunities and safety as men. However, for Abir Al-Sahlani, it is also about democracy. She mentioned that when half of the population faces violence and discrimination and is not allowed to make decisions about their bodies, that cannot be a real democracy.
