Indian Wrestlers’ #MeToo Movement: Vinesh Phogat Says Even Female Coaches Were Exploited

On Wednesday, Vinesh Phogat along with other prominent wrestlers accused the male coaches of the national camp and the president of the Wrestling Federation of India of sexually harassing female wrestlers for years. They also staged a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and said that they will not end it until action is taken against the WFI president. Recently, wrestler Vinesh Phogat made new revelations in the Indian Wrestlers’ #MeToo movement case, she revealed that not only female athletes, but female coaches were also exploited.

In an interview, wrestler Vinesh Phogat said that female coaches have also been the victims of exploitation. Phogat mentioned that women coaches have to tolerate exploitation, according to the Malayala Manorama report. She went on to add that the president of the Wrestling Federation of India and some male coaches are using their powers to interfere in wrestlers’ personal lives and they also try to humiliate them in every possible way if they try to speak up. Phogat said that some female athletes even thought about ending their lives. She added that MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will be held responsible if anything happens to the players.

Furthermore, wrestler Vinesh Phogat added that BJP MP and WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had mentally tortured and harassed her after her failure at the Tokyo Olympics. She said that he even called her a “khota sikka” which is quite insulting.
