“Confining Half-Population To Their Homes,” UN Bashes Taliban For Violating Women’s Rights In Afghanistan

On women’s day, the United Nations addressed the pathetic situation of women in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. The organisation made some strong statements on the country’s stringent and regressive rules for its women that leaves them with no freedom. On March 8, the occasion of International Women’s Day, the United Nations (UN) released a statement to highlight the problematic situation created for women under Taliban rule.

The Taliban has basically taken away all the rights of its women. They have been banned from educational institutions, gyms, and recreational parks. Recently, there were reports suggesting that Afghanistani women were being forced to return to abusive husbands and their divorces were annulled. The United Nations in its recent statement bashed the Taliban regime for imposing regressive rules on women despite making promises of not repeating mistakes from the past. The UN called Afghanistan, the most “regressive” country in the world when it comes to giving basic rights to its women and girls.

As per the news, the UN Secretary-General also said in her statement that the Taliban are trying their best to suppress the women, and girls and confine them to the four walls of the house. She condemned the various laws passed by the regime to restrict a woman’s education and career and also pointed out that even after a serious backlash, the Taliban did not take such problematic laws back. She termed this as the biggest “Humanitarian crisis” that the world has ever seen.

The world powers and third-world countries have repeatedly called out the Taliban’s inhumane treatment towards its women, but it has clearly fallen on deaf ears. We cannot even imagine what the women in Afghanistan are going through, and it’s distressing to even think that when the world celebrates International Women’s Day, there is a significant number of women who are pushed to see the darkest times of their lives.
