Union Minister Says Educated Women Like Shraddha Walker In Live-In Relationships Responsible For Crime Rate. Sir, Your Ignorance Is Shocking!

Crimes against women continue to rise across India and the one case that has left us all reeling in shock is the case of Shraddha Walker who was killed by her live-in partner Aftab Ameen Poonawalla. The woman was allegedly strangled by her 28-year-old partner after a fight. He then cut her body into 35 pieces and stored her body parts in the kitchen fridge while slowly disposing of pieces in the Mehrauli forest area over the span of 18 days. Ever since this crime was reported, every day new chilling and gruesome details of the murder are coming to light and sending shock waves throughout the nation. But what’s more shocking is the fact that political parties and society have turned this case into a cautionary tale for women instead of speaking up about domestic abuse and intimate partner violence. Shraddha Walker’s murder has now become a cautionary tale for parents and political leaders to moral police women for choosing a partner outside their caste and gender and for choosing live-in over marriage. Much in line with this thought, Union Minister Kaushal Kishore took the opportunity to shame “educated women” for picking “live-in” relationships.

Speaking to News 18, Minister of State for Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Kaushal Kishore said girls should also take responsibility, after all their parents raise them and then these girls drop their parents within seconds. He further questioned what’s the point of getting into a live-in relationship. Pointing out that one needs to have proper paperwork and registration in order to be in a live-in relationship, the Union Minister said in case a girl’s parents do not agree to a live-in relationship, she should opt for a court marriage before living with a man. Just when we thought he was starting to make sense, the minister clearly choose to put a foot in his mouth.

Further Union Minister Kaushal Kishore shared a rather interesting piece of unsolicited advice and information, which isn’t backed by data. Kishore said that these incidents are happening with educated women, who claim that they are “frank” and legal adults and hence can take their own decisions. “Women like these get tangled up in such matters. Educated women are responsible for such incidents,” said the Minister. Discussing the Shraddha Walker murder case, the minister pointed out that her parents told her not to date and get into a live-in relationship with Aftab but she did not listen to them and took a decision on her own. He went on to say that she should not have gotten involved in these things. Sharing some “essential” knowledge for us educated women, Union Minister Kaushal Kishore said that if you’re in love, you should get married instead of opting for a live-in relationship. He went on to question live-in relationships and said that what is the meaning of living with a man like a husband and wife without marriage and added that this is what is leading to crimes. Watch this complete video of Union Minister Kaushal Kishore shaming Shraddha Walker and other educated women across the country for getting into live-in relationships while being ignorant about the crimes committed by men against women.

I have something to say to Union Minister Kaushal Kishore. Sir, first of all, I think it’s time you take a long hard look at the crimes committed against women in marriage and the abuse meted out by husbands on their wives in the numerous cases where the women have either been murdered or had to commit suicide. Sadly, these crimes are more common than we’d like to accept but instead of blaming the man and society for creating an unsafe environment for women, you have chosen to blame women and their education. Do crimes not happen against uneducated women? Well, in case you didn’t know, allow me to enlighten you, crimes do happen against uneducated women too but due to the lack of education, knowledge and resources, these women are unable to seek justice. Another thing, I’d like to point out to you is that live-in relationships are legal in our country and what would be the point of live-in relationships if one had to simply get married? Live-in allows couples to understand their compatibility instead of simply plunging headfirst into marriage. Going against one’s parents to marry the person they love wouldn’t reduce the crimes against women, educated or not.
