Every year on September 5, India celebrates Teachers Day, a day dedicated to honouring the invaluable contributions of teachers in shaping the future of the nation. This day is particularly significant as it marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a distinguished philosopher, scholar, and the first Vice-President and second President of India.

The Origins of Teachers’ Day in India

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a native of Madras Presidency, who came into the world on 5th September 1888. A stunning intellect, he took professor positions at several leading educational establishments, including the University of Calcutta and Oxford University. It was not only about teaching but also writing which Radhakrishnan was very passionate about and was very successful at. His life achieved to such an extent that he was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1954 and was made an honorary member of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963 for his extraordinary achievements in the field of education.

The origins of Teachers’ Day in India are as motivating as the biography of Dr. Radhakrishnan himself. In 1962, the year when Dr. Radhakrishnan took over as the President of India, a group of students came to pay him respects asking him to celebrate his birthday. With his characteristic modesty, he stated that such an event should instead be used to pay our gratitude to all the teachers in the country. Given its chronology, September 5 has also since then become a Teachers’ Day in India, a day meant to commemorate the services rendered by teachers.

Significance of Teachers’ Day

Teachers’ Day celebration is very important in Indian society and therefore the teacher (guru) and student (shishya) relation is greatly revered.
