Study Reveals India Among Nations Witnessing Sperm Count Decline. Says A Lot About Men’s Reproductive Health!

The global population just reached 8 million! This population explosion is not good news because we are living in times where resources are decreasing in number and the ones consuming them are not! Amid this, there is a lot of discussion about female reproductive health. But no one ever thought about male reproductive health, did they? But a recent study has shed light on male reproductive health and revealed that sperm count in men globally over many years has gone down. This is the case in many countries and India also finds its name on this list.

When informed about a low sperm count, people generally assume it might be a cause of infertility but that is not the case every time. A decrease in sperm count can also be a symptom of testicular cancer or be linked to a chronic disease. The modern lifestyle and environment are said to be causes of low levels of sperm in men.

This study was published in the Human Reproduction Update on November 15, 2022. To arrive at this conclusion, the researchers collected data from 53 countries and also included information about men from countries that were not included before like – Africa, South America and Asia. Well, the comparisons between the men from North America, Europe and Australia and the men from Africa, South America and Asia revealed that the latter have significantly lower sperm counts and concentration than the former.

Talking about this trend in India, Professor Hagai Levine of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel said that India is also a part of this worrisome trend. He also added that now is the time to aggressively promote healthy environments that promote good reproductive health for men as well.

This study has shed light on male reproductive health and how it is not given due attention. Now is the time to rethink that because just as these things matter to women, they, too, for men. There is a stigma associated with male reproductive health in our county because if a man experiences such issues, it is said that he is not ‘man enough’. Such stigma lead to men nit getting checked up as well.
