Study Finds Men Don’t Prefer “Working Women” For Marriage. Itna Kyun Darte Ho Independent Women Se?

Nowadays, we are seeing more and more career-oriented women around us, which is a very revolutionary change that the world needed. At no cost do most women want to risk their careers and opt out of jobs, definitely not for “Marriage”. If the partner is right, working women would not be a problem ever, however, looks like that’s a very rare case in India. A recent study has proved that Indian men don’t prefer  “Working women” for marriage, misogyny is at its peak, right?

The study was conducted by four researchers, and their paper titled ‘Women’s Work, Social Work and the Marriage Market’ was published by the IZA Institute Of Labor Economics. The researchers conducted a thorough study to understand the preferences of men and women in the marriage market. And the results ended up highlighting the narrow-mindedness of men when it comes to selecting their partners. The researchers made profiles on marriage apps, and the profiles where women’s occupational status was “Working” received the least percentage (5.7%) of interest from men. But the ones where it showed “Not-working” had 7% of the men’s attention. As per the paper, if women worked in any kind of gender-neutral or masculine jobs, then they received approximately 6% of the men’s interests, which was not much.

The results also differed a lot depending on the city. Delhi and Bengaluru were cities selected for the study, and results showed that such a distinction was more in Delhi, whereas, in Bengaluru, it was insignificant. However, another criterion highlighted in the study was that men are only fine with a woman working after marriage, provided she is doing a “Feminine” job, as per the paper.

Well, not that these results are entirely shocking, because tbh, we do know that misogyny and patriarchy are deeply rooted in our culture. There are many men who have a problem with working women because they might fear their “Egos” being hurt if she earns more or is successful. And, this is so sad, also this is one reason why even women are very particular about choosing the right partner and not settling for anything less.
