NEET UG Exam In Bengal Turns Into An Examination Of Female Students’ Bra Straps. FAIL!

The issue of dress code checks in exams, especially for female candidates, is not new in India. For years, female students have been subjected to unnecessary and humiliating checks, ranging from being asked to remove jewellery to having their clothes scrutinized in detail. This recent incident at a NEET UG exam centre in West Bengal where a female candidate’s bra strap was checked has once again brought to the fore the question of whether exams in India are more like fashion shows, where more attention is given to what candidates are wearing rather than their actual knowledge and abilities.

While there may be some merit to the argument that dress codes are necessary to maintain decorum and prevent cheating, the extent to which female candidates are being scrutinized is unacceptable. It’s important to note that female candidates are not the only ones subjected to such checks; male candidates have also faced instances where they were asked to remove certain articles of clothing, such as caps or belts.

According to news reports, some female candidates appearing for NEET UG 2023 were subjected to an unnecessary and humiliating dress code check. The invigilators allegedly checked the straps of their bras and even asked some students to change their attire. This incident is not only shocking but also raises serious questions about the level of privacy and dignity afforded to female students during exams.

However, the focus on female candidates’ clothing is much more intense, with invigilators often checking the straps of their bras, their sleeve lengths, and even the length of their pants. This level of scrutiny is not only invasive but also completely unnecessary and often leads to female students feeling uncomfortable and embarrassed. Furthermore, the emphasis on dress codes takes away from the real purpose of the exam, which is to test the knowledge and skills of the candidates. If the focus is on what candidates are wearing, rather than their abilities, then it begs the question of whether exams in India are becoming more like fashion shows.

It’s important to understand that the issue here is not just about dress codes; it’s about the way in which female candidates are being treated. They have the right to wear whatever they feel comfortable in, without being subjected to unnecessary and invasive checks. It’s time for exam authorities to take a serious look at this issue and ensure that the dignity and privacy of all candidates, regardless of gender, are respected. Exams should be about knowledge and abilities, not fashion shows.
