Over 100 Employees Allege Google Refuses To Pay Approved Maternity Leaves After Lay-Offs

The massive layoffs that happened at Google earlier this year sent shockwaves across the world. The reasons behind these layoffs were the slow growth rates and also cost-cutting measures that the company had to fall back to due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And in what comes as a piece of surprising news regarding Google and its further step to cut costs, they are refusing to pay the laid-off employees for their approved maternity and sick leaves. This has not sat well with the more than 100 employees who have complained about not getting their due pay.

As per a CNBC report, the employees who are protesting were laid-off have come together to form a group and call themselves the ones who were ‘laid off on leave’. They are demanding that they be paid for the weeks and the months that were approved for their leaves before the massive layoffs were announced in January. Over 100 ex-Google employees are a part of this group, and want to be paid for the approved leaves.

A couple of people have spoken to the news portal and said that they will only be paid the standard severance money and the salary until the last working day at Google. This group of people has addressed this problem with Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai, and Fiona Cicconi, the Chief People Officer of the company but have not yet gotten a response from them. People who were granted maternity leave, medical leave, personal leave and caregiver’s leave are in this group.

Reportedly, 1400 employees from Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc, came together to sign a petition wherein they demanded to be treated better when the layoff process was going on. This looks like a purposeful move to lay off those employees who had gotten their leaves approved, thinking it would be easier to let them go without pay.

It is hard to even imagine what the laid-off employees must be going through. The ones who were on their maternity leave and also the ones who had taken sick leaves getting the news that they are not required to join the company after their leave period is over must have been extremely shocking. They need to be compensated for their impromptu dismissal from the company.
