The clip shows an unsettling reality of Chennai local trains at night and has received a lot of attention from internet users.

The 2 AM Stories is led by Hauterrfly’s Associate Editor. In the recent episode, she bravely set out to explore the city of Chennai at night. To learn more about women’s safety, she took a local train too. Despite a heavy crowd travelling on the train at night, she got a discomforting stare from a man sitting right across her. In the viral video, the man is seen making lewd gestures at her for a few minutes straight with no fear of the consequences whatsoever. Many internet users reacted to the video with rage. In response to everyone who claimed that the man reacted in this way because the woman carried a camera in her hand, the Associate Editor said, “Even when I did not have the camera in my hand, or it was hidden and not evidently visible, people were still staring. So we eventually realised that it was not about the camera.” The video went viral of Reddit and was discussed by the users. Many people raised their concerns about women’s safety in India and expressed shock.

She further recalled her experience of roaming around in Chennai at night and said, “Another thing that triggered me was the fact that a large number of public places like eateries or restaurants were male-dominated. I hardly saw women around.”

The video is another not-so-shocking proof that India needs to do much better in terms of women’s safety. Even if the law and orders are in place, it’s the scary mindset of people that needs to be tackled first! We, women do not feel safe anywhere, safety is like a myth for us. Whatever reactions of men were recorded in the video are a reality that women have to go through daily. From short dresses to ethnic attires, our dresses are never the concern for men who want to make us uncomfortable with their long stares, hand movements and sometimes lewd comments. The video should serve as a wake-up call for everyone to understand that women are still unable to roam freely in the country at any hour of the day and that we always carry fear.
