Gujarat Court Sentences Asaram Bapu To Life In Prison For Rape, Prosecutor Calls Him “Habitual Offender”

Over the years, we’ve seen several self-styled godmen target and exploit women. And it’s an absolute relief to watch them put behind bars for their crimes. One such man is Asaram Bapu. The self-styled godman is currently serving a life imprisonment sentence after being convicted by a Jodhpur Court for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl among other crimes. And now Asaram Bapu has been convicted again by Gandhinagar Sessions Court in a separate case and sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, sexual assault and wrongful confinement among other things.
The Gandhinagar Sessions Court was hearing a 10-year-old case against the 81-year-old godman under Sections 376 (rape), 377 (sodomy), 354 (outraging the modesty of a woman), 346 (wrongful confinement), 120B (criminal conspiracy) as well as 201 (destroying evidence) of the Indian Penal Code. On Monday, Additional Sessions Court Judge DK Soni held Asaram Bapu guilty of the crimes but he reserved the order for sentencing on Tuesday. Earlier on January 31, after hearing the arguments on the quantum of the sentence, the Gandhinagar Sessions Court sentenced Asaram Bapu to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 50,000, which has to be paid to the victim.

During the argument, Special Public Prosecutor RC Kodekar sought life imprisonment and a heavy fine for the godman in the 2013 Surat Rape Case. The prosecution called Asaram Bapu a “habitual offender” while seeking stringent punishment, as per media reports.

In 2013, a Surat-based woman accused Asaram Bapu of forcefully confining her in his Ashram located in Motera on the outskirts of Ahmedabad between 2001 and 2006 and raping her repeatedly. The woman also accused the self-styled godman’s wife, their daughter and 4 of his other disciples of aiding and abetting the crime. However, the 6 other accused were acquitted by the Gandhinagar Sessions Court due to lack of evidence.

The woman registered an FIR in Ahmedabad’s Chandkheda police station against all the accused persons in 2013 after Asaram Bapu was arrested by Rajasthan police for sexually assaulting a minor girl. Following the complaint, the chargesheet was filed by the concerned police station in July 2014 after an investigation. The delay in filing the FIR was claimed to be due to criminal intimidation and the same was argued in court and accepted by the court. Asaram Bapu is currently in Jodhpur jail serving a life imprisonment sentence for raping a minor girl in 2013 on the pretext of exorcising evil spirits from her.
Well, it looks like Asaram Bapu will be spending the rest of his life behind bars and paying for the crimes committed by him. It may have taken 10 years but in the end, truth won and justice has been served.
