10 Yrs Of Nirbhaya: DCW Calls Out Govt’s Inefficiency On Women’s Safety

It’s been 10 years since the brutal Nirbhaya rape case happened, but the question remains, has anything really changed for women’s safety? In fact this year, India witnessed more brutal crimes against women. The recent one is the Delhi acid attack case. On December 16, 2012, a young woman, who was a physiotherapy intern was gang-raped by 6 men in a moving bus. It was a nightmare for the whole country. The chief of the Delhi Commission For Women, Swati Maliwal addressed letters to both houses of Parliament requesting them to dedicate this day to the discussion of women’s safety.

In the history of women’s safety, December 16, 2012, will always be remembered as a black day in our country. It’s 2022, and it’s already been 10 years since the Nirbhaya case sent chills down the spine of every Indian, it still does. Swati Maliwal, chief of the Delhi Commission For Women, wrote a letter to the speaker of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha’s chairman, Om Birla, and Jagdeep Dhankar respectively. In the letter, Swati Maliwal reminded the authorities about the brutal gang-rape of a young girl in Delhi, that happened on a wintery night in December 2012. She mentioned that the protests against the crime did lead to many reforms in the rape laws. However, Swali Maliwal then pointed out in the letter, that even though laws were amended, crimes against women are still on a rise in the country. She mentioned that 6 rape cases happen every day in Delhi. The chief of DCW also wrote about the recent acid attack case in the National capital and questioned the sale of acid, which still continues to take place openly.

The DCW chief also pointed out the government’s inefficiency in taking strict measures to curb the crimes against women, and in instilling fear in the minds of the people. In the letter, she also mentioned about the Nirbhaya fund, which has only been reduced over the years. In view of the 10th anniversary of the Nirbhaya case, the DCW chief requested both houses to dismiss the parliamentary business and give this day to discussing women’s safety.

We could not agree more with the DCW chief on this. There is an urgent need to take concrete steps against brutal crimes against women. The women’s commissions have repeatedly given their opinions and suggestions on such matters, it’s high time, the governments start to take note of it and act accordingly to make this country a safe place for us.
