Reddit Thread About Expectations In A Relationship Will Open Your Eyes To Your Toxic Patterns

I am about to say something which will sound extremely stupid but it is a valid concern. I am currently unsure how to be in a relationship. Personally, I have had a problem with completely understanding and communicating my needs and have been the type to always put my partner before myself. All of this eventually accumulates into me being unhappy and dissatisfied in a relationship and the overall thing crumbling down. It is something I am working on and a vicious cycle almost all of my romantic endeavors have gone through.

So while I remain single and figure out what I want from a partner, I am unsure of how to ask for things from a partner. How much is too much? Am I being unreasonable? Am I settling for less? All these questions haunt me and while a sit and wallow in existential dread, this question on Reddit’s r/AskWomen caught my attention. They asked, “How do you determine what you need from your partner vs what is expecting too much of them? How can you tell when you’re expecting too much? Also, how can you tell if you’re overreacting to something your partner did?” and the answers were pretty enlightening.

These really opened my eyes to a lot of my own toxic habits in my previous relationships. People pleasing is something most of us suffer with and for many of us, we even bring it into our love lives where we constantly compromise our needs and wants to accommodate our partner. But if you aren’t getting that same energy in return and are constantly putting in efforts with no reciprocation in return, is that a dynamic you want to be a part of? I think understanding what you bring to the table and what you expect from a partner in return isn’t wrong or selfish, it is looking out for yourself. I don’t believe in “unconditional love”. Love always has conditions. You and your partner will enjoy your relationship until both of your find comfort and satisfaction with one another. When one stops putting in the work, it is easy for a relationship to turn sour, resentful and unhappy.
