‘Udan Patolas’ Review: This Story Of Four Girlfriends Embracing Mumbai While Staying True To Their Punjabi Roots Is Kaafi Masaledaar!

Female friendships are quite underrated and often badly portrayed in movies and series. I do not want to take names and call out any particular show but I guess you must have guessed which Indian series I am particularly talking about. But I finally found the OG show on ‘sisterhood’ that made me laugh out loud, relate to some scenes and terribly made me miss my own girl gang! I am talking about Udan Patolas and this one was most definitely worth it. Udan Patolas is an Amazon MiniTv series that stars Aasttha Ssidana, Sukhmani Sadana, Apoorva Arora and Poppy Jabbal as the leading patolas in the series. It was released on June 10.

Plot Of Udan Patolas

This is the story of four girlfriends Noorpreet aka Noor, Punnet aka Punni, Lovely aka Lovelle and Amrinder aka Amrit. Well, if you are wondering they all are known by their alternate names let me clear the confusion for you. These four ladies have come from Punjab to Mumbai to make it big. So, they decide that in order to lose their old-school-ness, they will have to change their names to something cool. Hence the aka after each of their names.  Well, this six-episode series navigates through these patolas’ day-to-day lives, not just personal but professional as well. Out of these four, Noor, Punni and Lovelle work at the same firm while um, and from what I deduce, Amrit is already settled by running a good business. There is nothing extraordinary about the plot except what these four are up to in everyday life and how they tackle problems.

Now since the three of them work at the same place, they have tons of gossip and problems to share but they do not make Amrit feel left out. They work at one of the top financial companies and hence, leave no stone unturned to dress up as goddesses to work every day. The four meet for lunches and dinners regularly and go on a vacation to Goa for the weekend because they earn that much and that bit is duly justified as well. What I loved watching the most was while they’re the true divas that they are, their ander ki Punjaban pounces out like a tigress when they are stressed. They cuss in Punjabi and will tear anyone to shreds if the other person does not respect them as well!

But what is really hilarious is their love lives. Noor, Punni and Lovelle date men who sometimes end up being sample pieces while sometimes they turn out to be really great people but then at such times it is time who effs it up for them. It is heartening to see all of them being there for each other in their sukhs and dukhs while never once judging one another. That is true friendship, y’ll!

Cast of Udan Patolas

I absolutely love the cast. Each of them so them perfectly fit in their roles so much so that while watching the show I believed they were playing themselves. Aasttha, Sukhmani, Apoorva and Poppy breathe life into their characters in their own unique way. All four of them feel like a breath of fresh air and I found something relatable in each of them. Noor and Punni are the funny ones of the lot while Amrit and Lovelle are the sane ones and this adds a perfect balance to the group.

Noor and Punni regularly have crushes but both have very different outlooks on love. Whereas Amrit is in a stable relationship already while Lovelle is in an ‘it is complicated’ phase. I just love how they represent a normal group of four girls! The rest of the cast also fits well in their own roles with each one making up for the other’s flaw.

Verdict

This series was a perfect slump-breaker for me. I was super sceptical when I decided to watch it because I know the fate shows based on female friendships meet when made in India. But this one was surprisingly breathy and amazing to watch. What left me a bit confused was that sometimes the plot felt like it was going in a random direction. There wasn’t continuity between the episodes but if you notice closely, each episode focuses on a different angle and story, so the randomness made sense. In fact, it also made me look at the series from a fresh perspective. I did not have to care about what happened in the last episode. It was like episode khatam, story khatam and new episode, new story!

Now, coming to the male characters, they were poorly executed, to be honest. They were given every dream man’s qualities but somehow the actors did not reflect that. I would have loved to add a couple of favourite fictional male characters to my list but alas, the series did not make it possible!
