YouTuber Toxic Madan Arrested For Abusing Women Online. His Wife Claims They Don’t Have A Luxury Car, Just An Audi

A few days ago, I was mindlessly scrolling through my Instagram feed when I came across the post that talked about how the line between our real world and the virtual world is blurring more and more every day. I thought about this a lot and realized that there is nothing more terrifying than living in a Black Mirror kind of world. It’s a possibility. Especially considering that a lot of people are using social networking sites to spread hatred and propagate concepts that we are trying so hard to do away with. And the arrest of YouTuber ‘Toxic’ Madan is a clear sign of that. You know, I can’t understand why people are surprised that someone who chose to call himself ‘toxic’ was making content that was derogatory to women. But hey, what’s in a name, right?

Before I give you the latest update on the Toxic Madan case, let me give you a little background. On 18th June, the Chennai police filed an FIR against Youtuber Madhan Manikkam aka Toxic Madan for using offensive and inappropriate language against women in his videos. According to reports, in a video of his, he said that all women were prostitutes and then went on to use cuss words and describe their bodies in an obscene manner. Police believe that Madan purposely chose to create misogynistic content to attract subscribers and gain popularity in a short period of time and earn easy money. Clearly, a great strategy.

Once his videos gained traction, there were nearly 150 complaints against Madan’s channel. The Tamil Nadu State Commission for Protection of Child Rights also received complaints against the channel. Not to mention that the Madan was also accused of financial fraud. Madan, who was absconding for three days, was nabbed at his friend’s house in Dharmapuri by a special team of the Cyber Crime Wing of the Central Crime Branch. His Youtube channel, which has nearly 106K subscribers, mostly teenagers, has been blocked.

On Tuesday, Madan was booked under the Goondas Act for using derogatory language against women in his videos. Last month, his wife, Kruthika, was also arrested as an accomplice in his cyber crimes but was later released after an investigation. After Madan was detained earlier this week, she addressed reporters at the Chennai Commissionerate office. Her statements were problematic, to say the least.

Kruthika, who is denying her involvement in her husband’s crimes, came out in his defence and said that Madan’s primary source of income was the Youtube channels. She also mentioned that they hadn’t bought a property in the last 10 years and that contrary to several media reports they didn’t drive any luxury car, just an Audi A6. Erm, first of all, this is a weak defence and it reeks of privilege. She told the reporters, “Our bank accounts are frozen by the police; our livelihood has been hit as the YouTube channel is shut.”

Further on, she questioned the Chennai police about booking Madan under the Goondas Act when there isn’t a clear case against him. Kruthika said, “There are claims that Madan cheated many people. But there is no single person who has come forward and claimed that Madan owes them money. Such claims are baseless.”

Hopefully, the police get to the bottom of this and Madan and his wife are adequately sentenced. Their need to earn fast and easy money has in turn propagated sexist and misogynistic beliefs. It’s disgusting that they would poison the mind’s of teenagers in this manner. We are glad though that this kind of indecency is not tolerated and swift action was taken against this couple.
