Afghan Women Demand International Action Against Taliban, Say They’re Facing ‘Gender Apartheid’

It’s a no-brainer that Afghanistan has become ‘no country for women’ after the Taliban occupied it in the year 2021. Many International reports have revealed that the women of Afghanistan are facing torture and abuse under the Taliban rule and their situation is getting worse with each passing day. On Monday, Aghan women called for international actions to tackle ‘gender apartheid’ in their country at the United Nations.

While speaking at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Afghanistan’s journalist and human rights activist – Mahbouba Seraj said that human rights in Afghanistan do not exist and mentioned that she is sick and tired of raising alarms and seeing no one taking any action about the decimation of women and girls’ rights in the country. Afghan lawyer Razia Sayad, who previously served as a commissioner at the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission said that the women of Afghanistan are left to the mercy of an anti-women group that does not recognise them as human beings.

Naheed Farid, a women’s rights activist and the youngest-ever politician elected to parliament in the year 2010 told the UN news conference that the world should label the Taliban a gender-apartheid regime. She added that women of Afghanistan are choosing to take their lives out of hopelessness and despair because they prefer dying as a better choice than living under the Taliban rule which is full of restrictions.

At the press conference, another human right activist – Najiba Sanjar mentioned that millions of Afghan women and girls are experiencing one of the most unique dilemmas in human history and the whole world is watching them suffer.
