70 YO Woman Was Killed By 5 People Under Suspicion Of Witchcraft. Why Is This Archaic Belief Still So Prevalent?
It isn’t uncommon to see women being persecuted for crimes they didn’t commit. I am certain you people must have heard about the term “witch-hunt”. And if you haven’t already you should go on read about the Salem witch trials. However, the mentality might seem archaic but it is still very much practised even today. One of Jharkand’s major social event is murder due to suspicion of witchcraft. And a new report has come from the state as a 70 year old woman was killed under the same pretences.
Police reported on Tuesday that a 70-year-old woman was beaten and killed death in the Garhwa district of Jharkhand by villagers who suspected that she practised witchcraft. The event occurred in Khuri village, which is located in the Chiniyan police station area. According to authorities, a person has been taken into custody for questioning.
According to sources, the woman’s family said That five people forcefully took her approximately 200 metres from her home on Sunday around 8.30 p.m. They then went on to beat her to death with sticks. A police officer said that the woman’s body has been transported for a post-mortem examination.
Last year in October, a similar case had been reported in Madhya Pradesh. A 40-year-old lady was reportedly murdered on Thursday in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur by her nephew on suspicion of witchcraft. In front of her family, including her son Govind, the victim’s throat was slashed with a knife. Bala Bai, the victim, was at home in Nadiya Khurd village. Her nephew, Vishnu, 20, began arguing with her. The dispute escalated, and Vishnu’s father Balram, mother, and wife Sandhya joined him.

Vishnu and Sandhya married recently, but his wife stated that Bala Bai was a witch involved in occult practices. According to the officer, the two families were at odds about inheritance. Vishnu threw Bala Bai’s body in the bushes some 200 metres away after committing the crime.

Murder on suspicion of witchcraft is Jharkhand’s most prevalent social evil. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 590 persons, predominantly women, were killed in this case between 2001 and 2020.
