Who Was Savita Kanswal, The Record-Setter Mountaineer Who Lost Her Life In The Uttarakhand Avalanche?

I find mountain climbing to be very fascinating. It is a tough task that needs a lot of courage and determination. Our country is lucky to have some great mountaineers who have done us proud. Among those was the record-setter mountaineer, Savita Kanswal. India woke up to very unfortunate news of Savita Kanswal’s death on Thursday morning. Savita died in an avalanche that hit the Draupadi Danda-II mountain peak in Uttarkashi, in Uttarakhand.

Savita Kanswal,26, was working as an instructor at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, since 2018. Savita was on an advanced mountaineering course and was accompanied by 41 trainees in the Draupadi Danda-II mountain peak when they got stuck in the avalanche, on Tuesday. On October 5, Wednesday, her death was confirmed by the principal of the Nehru Institute, and 9 more lives were also lost in this natural calamity. The rescue operation is still undergoing.

List Of Accomplishments

Savita Kanswal, who hailed from Uttarakhand, has had a successful career in Mountaineering. Although to build a career in Mountaineering, that too as a woman, came as the biggest challenge for her. but with determination and hard work, she conquered it too. The very recent achievement Savita added to her bag was in May 2022 when she climbed the Mountain Everest and hoisted our National flag. Within a gap of 16 days, she again set off to scale Mount Makalu which is the fifth-highest peak in the world. With these two achievements to her name, Savita also created a national record. She was also the second woman mountaineer to have scaled Mount Lhotse, the world’s fourth highest peak.
