Vidya Balan’s First Salary Was ₹500 And This Is What She Had To Do To Earn That

I remember the first time I started working, I was merely 17 years old and had no idea about the world I was entering. It’s not like I still understand it completely but it’s way better. The one thing that hasn’t changed since then is the thrill I get when I get my salary. Who doesn’t like getting paid for their hard work? It was when I got the first salary that I realized that no work is easy and especially not the kind that pays you! This adulting business is hard.

Recently, Vidya Balan opened up about her first salary and her first job, in an interview with Zoom. She revealed how her first salary was ₹500 that she earned while doing a promotional campaign for a state tourism department. Earning ₹500 may not seem like a lot now, but back then it held a lot of value. But it’s more interesting what she made that money for.

Vidya Balan spoke about how her acting career started much earlier than when she starred in Ekta Kapoor’s Hum Paanch in 1995. She recalled how her sister, cousin, and her friend had tagged along with her for the state tourism campaign. “We had to just stand beside a tree, and just smile,” she remembered fondly. Which is interesting because she made her first salary from that smiling.

She also spoke about going for her first audition for a TV show, named La Bela. A show that was never aired. Her journey throughout the years has gotten her to bag the role of Vidya Vincent in Amit Masurkar’s upcoming movie, Sherni. A film that is to be released worldwide on Amazon Prime.

Vidya Balan when asked about her character, said that “She’s a person of few words, smiles rarely but is a doer. She does what she believes in and she believes in doing it the right way. It’s like saying that you don’t need to roar to be a tigress. So my character is a tigress but she does not roar.”

And to me that basically sums up Vidya Balan’s personality. From her fierce movie choices to her unapologetically bold personality, she does not have to roar to catch the attention of the audience. Her skills and her persona do that for her! And now she’s relatable too, given that her first salary was pretty much like us.
