US College Offers Pornography Course Where Students Will Watch Porn “Together”, Says Porn Is More Popular Than Football

As a teenager, it took me a while to figure out what I wanted to study in college and that’s the case with a lot of us. We all check out all kinds of courses and subjects that we may want to study in-depth in college but do you know that some colleges offer some of the most absurd courses that will just blow your mind. From a course in stupidity to the art of walking to getting dressed, some colleges offer the most bizarre courses one can even imagine and if that wasn’t enough, there’s a new course that will leave you shocked. The Westminster College of Salt Lake City of Utah in the United States of America has introduced an elective course in pornography. Yepp, you read that right, a course in porn.

The liberal arts college, Westminster College is offering a course titled Gndr 300O Porn/Film 300O Porn under the Gender Studies and Film courses. According to the course description, students will be watching pornographic films together and discuss the sexualization of race, class and gender to earn credits. On its website, the college stated that hardcore pornography is much more popular than “Sunday night football”. According to the catalogue on the college website, this course allows students to earn 2 credits.

A screenshot of the description of the course went viral on social media and led to a social media backlash. It drew severe criticism and soon after several media outlets claimed that the college removed the references to the course from its website. But it seems like while the name of the course has been withdrawn from the listing of the Westminster College website, the plan to go ahead with the course has not been changed.

According to media reports, the college authorities do not plan to take down the course over the controversy. The authorities have also shared that they often offer elective courses that give students an opportunity to analyse social issues. They further added that this course description may sound controversial but the fact remains that it helps students decide if they want to engage in a serious academic investigation of the controversial topic of pornography.

Well, as bizarre as this course may sound, the description does say that it aims to get students to discuss the sexualization of race, class and gender which, IMHO, seems like the right way to go. We cannot deny the fact that pornography sexualises people from certain races and gender (read: female) so, it’s only fair to discuss, analyse and investigate the same. It may not be a very helpful course academically but it will surely raise awareness and get the conversation going around the kind of porn people consume.
